From Easy To Love, Difficult To Discipline by Becky Bailey

WEEK TWO

ATTITUDE SHIFT: Harnessing the Power of Attention
REASON: What you focus on, you get more of
DISCIPLINE SKILL: Assertiveness
VALUE: Respect

*tell your child what you will do. "i will be happy to talk to you when you are calm," or "i am going to stop the car and make sure all children are safe, with seat belts on."

ASSERTIVENESS: Saying no and being heard

*teach your children how to get what they want and respect the rights of others by saying to the aggressor:
1. "you wanted ____________. (attribute positive intent)
2. "you may not __________. __________ hurts (or is not safe)."
3. "when you want _________, say (or do) _________.
4. "do it now! practice."

just a reminder... for the next two weeks i will do 2-3 posts for the week instead of daily. i'll be out of town, and my parents' internet connection is VERY slow. i may just continue through the rest of the challenge in this manner, as it seems we hit slower times. i hope this works for everybody.

dd is too young (not enough language skills) for this, but, i think i would have to skip that last line... i have this arnold shwartz..... voice in my head saying "do it. do it now." for some reason

and i really don't want him there

another good script

my kids are old enough for this and we already do some of it, but this will be good to fill our gaps and help them work things out between themselves

I got behind on our study -- well I was using the book but not reading in this forum.

With preverbals I do step two as I redirect. I have even started this with Savana (9 months). "you may not hit. Hitting hurts. Gentle hands" as I say gentle I show her with my hand - she is big on hair pulling, hitting and biting right now. As I type this, I may start assigning positive intent. For example, she often hits me to get my attention. She cruises over and smacks me in the face when she wants me to pick her up. I may start saying "You want mama to pick you up (do the sign as I say it). You may not hit, hitting hurts. Genlte."
