My unschooling preschooler wants to learn sign language...
Actually she is learning sign language. She watched Sign-me-a-story from the library and now shows me all the motions! Wow! I am excited that she is so into this. What else should I provide for this age? Are there any preschool books or ahhhh-curriculum or videos or something-that would help her delve deeper into this?

Re: My unschooling preschooler wants to learn sign language...
Our family recently got the Sign with your Baby kit from http://www.sign2me.com/ (actually we ordered it from a Barnes and Noble store with a homeschooler's discount) to get ready to sign with our impending arrival. That kit focuses on signing with preverbal babies; but since you have one, older sis might enjoy teaching with you while she learns. It's nice because it focuses on things that small children need to communicate.
They also have a kit called Pick Me Up http://www.sign2me.com/pmu.php that is recommended for kids 7 mo to 7 years that is much more extensive. I wish I would have known about this one first. Isn't great when our kids get all excited about such cool stuff? Have fun. |

Very cool! For a preschooler, I'd recommend the video, "Talking Hands". You may be able to get it from your library! Another one to look for that she may enjoy is "Sign with Me". Even though it got horrible reviews by most Amazon reviewers, Nemo looooooved it and was mesmerized by the children signing things he was familiar with. But the Talking Hands is the best one, IMO, if you have to choose only one.

Just be careful! I'm taking an interpreting class and actually don't recommend learning without an instructor, but since they are so little it shouldn't make a difference. A good example is the sign 'thirsty' - if you do the sign very slowly or repeatedly is means 'lust', not 'very thirsty'.
