Ok ladies, I need some resources from yall.

My dh and I have been going to Grace Community Church (yes, John MacArthurs church) here in LA. We absolutely love it so far, but of course, everyone is pretty punitive there, though we have been able to look past it for the most part. I honeslty dont think theres a church out there that we could agree with theologically AND who encourages gbd. *sigh* You take some, you give some.

Anywho...

The Bible study group we go to is led by a Christian counselor who works at MacArthur's ministry, Grace to You, and who went to Masters Seminary. When we told him we chose not to spank and not use corporal punishment, he told me he was interested in what grace based parenting was, as he had never heard of it. So we got to talking more about it tonight and while he had some disagreements, obviously, he said he'd like to learn more and to read articles or links about anti-spanking or grace based parenting as relates to the Bible. So I need things that are Biblically anti-spanking (I'd love to send him to Positive Discipline or Aha! Parenting, but then Im sure Id be labeled a Christian that is using secular pop ungodly psychology to parent, lol.. Id rather not deal with that headache).

Any articles or links? Im going to send him the Samuel Martin ebook about anti-spanking.

Bookshelf (http://pinterest.com/hadassahsukkot/grace-based-parenting-bookshelf/) (growing every day!)
All my GBD stuff (http://yeshua-hineni.blogspot.de/2013/07/a-wonderful-new-invention-pinterest.html)

Both of those reference authors I know of on the forums, as well as other resources. It doesn't exclude people based on whether or not they're Christian or Psychologists.

It might be easier when to lose the term "anti-spanking" when contrasting with grace-based discipline. Non-punitive would be a more descriptive counter-term. There are punitive parents who are anti-spanking.

Many spanking parents will think you're advocating time-outs, grounding, etc., when you say "anti-spanking". To many, we're introducing a whole new paradigm they hadn't known existed and it's some hard thinking we're asking them to do. They'd be off the hook for that hard thinking by just telling themselves "time-outs, then" and you want to steer them away from that.

That's true. I found that when trying to talk to my friends about spanking... the whole idea of not seeing everything your child does as an act of rebellion is a foreign concept. I struggle with it myself sometimes.

Someone posted this here awhile back and I loved it. I've shared it with several mom's that I have met. I love this post!

Corporal Punishment in the Bible: A Redemptive Movement Hermeneutic by William J. Webb. This book is very scholarly, biblical, and impressive. If I were trying to win over a man like you described, this is what I would give him.
