View Full Version : Umm... he wants a locket?

So K told me the other day that he wants a locket so that he can have a picture inside it and write the 'Do unto others...' verse so that he can remember to be good because he asks God but he never remembers to be good in time. :giggle :( :giggle

Ah, so much to unpack in that request.

First, of course, is just trying to help him to understand that none of us are good all the time and part of growing up is just learning to make better decisions each time. He still doesn't understand what I'm saying. I don't know how to say it better.

And second...well, trying to explain that they don't make lockets for boys. I looked, but it really seems like everything is hearts and butterflies and flowers. I kind of wish they DID make lockets for boys. Any good suggestions for alternatives? I thought about maybe looking for some cool dog tags. But I worry about him playing on the playground while wearing it. (Although I suspect it would get worn about once before he tired of it.)

I have a locket that's just kind of an oval shape. :shrug They do make ones that are fairly gender-neutral. What about one of those rubber bracelets that are (or were) so popular? Surely with all the hundreds of varieties they've made a Golden Rule one by now? :think

Like me he is not a big fan of having things on his wrists (although I can't live without my watch). I'll have to keep looking for a gender neutral locket. Too bad I can't find an old non-working pocket watch, I think that would be cool.

I don't know if it would be safe for playground wear, but they also make those pendants where you have a grain of rice or something inside that you can inscribe words on.

I like that first one. I had tried googling it but mostly came up with lockets FOR moms OF boys. Because apparently I have the first boy EVER to want a locket.

They are probably more than I want to spend on something he will lose or stop wearing pretty quickly.

I think I should get him a Time Lord pocket watch... :shifty

i like the pocket watch idea, bc he could still put what he wants to on the one side and maybe the watch part would keep him "into" it longer

:melting I think that's a wonderfully sweet idea he's had!

I think it is too, and I'm really curious as to where on earth he ever came up with the idea for a locket. It also makes me a little sad that he feels like he can't remember to be good.

There's also these: http://www.stickyj.com/pendants-stainless-pendants.html Not lockets, but they can be engraved with anything and look like dog tags, so definitely not super girly. ;)

Don't be sad! To me it's a beautiful sign that the Holy Spirit is working in his sweet little heart. One of the things the Spirit does is to offer conviction :heart I often feel that pain too, of wishing I were better at "being good" or saying "yes Lord" but it makes grace all the sweeter.
And it's a perfect segway into talking about grace and the holy Spirit and all kinds of things with him :heart
