View Full Version : What are your favourite cloth diapers -2011 edition

I know we have had this thread in the past, but the one in the sticky is from 2007 and since I know the cloth diapering world is constantly changing, I thought we should start a new one. Also, I know that new cloth diaperers look at this "favourites" thread for recommendations, so let's keep an up to date one.

So share. What is your favourite diapering system? And favourite brand?

I've completely changed since 2007. :giggle I ditched all my (many) expensive WAHM fitteds and random pockets, and have gone for simple.

Prefolds
Thirsties Duo Snap covers
Rumparooz pockets for going out

That's it. Folding is a breeze. I feel so free. :giggle

Our current system is prefolds, trifolded into "insert socks (http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?products_id=736)", in a Flip or Bummis SuperLite cover. The insert socks aren't strictly necessary, but keep the prefold in place while trying to change a baby who is trying to crawl away.

We had to buy new covers recently to replace some worn-out hand-me-downs, and I wanted to love Thirsties, since everyone else does- but, we've tried three of their covers, and, for every one, the rise snaps would not stay closed. I was so disappointed, since everyone else loves them so much.

After using FuzziBunz and BumGenius for over a year - we tried Green Mountain Diaper prefolds and Thirsties* covers/wool this summer.

And I fell in :heart

I don't know what it is - the prefolds make it easier to rinse out toddler poop? Having my pockets handwashed means I can't strip them and they are less absorbent? Woolies make me :melting ? I'm just tired of stuffing pockets??? :shrug3

Overall I feel like the FuzziBunz have held up better to the handwashing and I still like them, but I'm reaching for the prefolds the most. I've even noticed DH using them more frequently than the pockets.

I liked starting with pockets (because they are easy to stuff all at once and then are waiting to be used) and they probably eased me into cloth diapering.

But now I'm a prefold girl.

*I prefer the Thirsties old-style cover to the Thirsties Duo. We just can't get the Duo (with snaps) to fit the Urchin very well.

I'm re-using my Bumgenius for my second baby but the velcro is not good now. Makes me wish I've bought system of Bumgenius with poppers - but my system was an opportunitstic secondhand deal.

I have non-Bumgenius nappies - like prefolds, fitted prefolds, couple of AIOs...but I always end up reaching or Bumgenius.

So, subbing :popcorn

i go back and forth to which i love the most. I do love my dream -eze AIO's, but i love my BGs pockets too. I used to love my good mama's, but decided i really don't like how long they take to dry. same with my BG elementals.

I started with Prefolds and Thirsties covers then transitioned to several Fuzzi Bunz then to Kawaii Baby UNTIL I found Green Mountain Fitted the workhorse of diapers with a sewn in doubler and covered with a Thirsties cover hands down the best of the best :heart

I started with prefolds and Thirsties and Bummis covers. I liked the Thirsties covers better, but I don't have any in his current size. I have a couple of Wonder Wraps (which might not be available anymore? Not sure) that I like well enough except the stitching is coming out. For a while I used FuzziBunz one size and for a while I really liked them, but I was just having so many problems with stink and ammonia burns and it was SO MUCH WORK to keep them from giving my boy rashes. I did like how easy it was to scrape poop off of them though. But the water here is so awful it just makes washing them a nightmare.

So now I'm back to using mostly prefolds (GMD), Wonder Wraps (which I would love to replace...maybe with Thirsties) and wool. I LOVE the wool and use it mostly at home- I prefer a PUL cover when out since we tend to go longer between changes when out. I also have a handful of Green Mountain Diaper fitteds and if I could afford to, I would change my entire stash over to those right now. I'm planning on selling at least some of my prefolds and replacing with the fitteds before our new baby arrives.

We use a mix of pockets, fitted, prefolds, wool, and PUL covers (almost exclusively sized Thirsties). I have loved prefolds but right now I'm loving our pockets!

Currently I'm way into the OS Fuzzibunz, but I also have a BG AIO that I'd love to get some more of - and we also like good ol' Kawaii pockets. We have a few Katydids that I actually do not like. Grovia AI2s are great in terms of absorbency and slimness, but the side snaps fit a little weird on my dd.

For fitteds we used to LOVE Sugar Peas hemp fitteds when dd was tiny, but now as she's gotten bigger and mobile they just don't fit great. We recently got some newborn Cricketts that are similar and I'm looking forward to having them for the new baby! :rockon I might be one person who HATED Goodmamas. I now own only one and while it's adorable it's also a last resort diaper. I got in on the BSRB craze too and can't stand them. They don't Snappi well, and even if I used pins the front pieces never line up right, if that makes sense. I do love how trim they are, but I don't think they're well designed.

We like the BumGenius pockets (mostly 3.0 but I love the 4.0 that I do have). For nights, double stuffing a Thirsties pocket with a hemp insert works well. I do like Thirsties, but the velcro doesn't work as well as the BG velcro.

We did EC, so our needs might be slightly different, but we were on the prefold wagon for a long time as well. We used wool early on - I hate PUL covers. Well, I only tried Bummis, and I had one Thirsties that I liked ok, but wool is SO much better.

Once DS was more mobile, it was a lot of naked time still, but when it was chilly I wanted something on his little tush. I didn't want to mess with covers, and I was scared that the snappi would poke his eye out or something :giggle So I got snapping fitteds - some wahm ones, some kissaluvs, and some MEOS. I like the MEOS the best. We are still using them coverless, except at night because he sleeps in his own bed now and sometimes I don't get to him fast enough in the morning before he pees.

I have GMD prefolds and a bunch of different covers, but I love my FuzziBunz most of all.

Our stash is mainly BG pockets. I also have prefolds and Thirsties and Bummis covers. I didn't like prefolds at all until a few months ago, and now I'm liking them more.

I also love Rumparooz and Best Bottoms.

I started with blueberry pockets and loved them ...until I switched to prefolds and covers and realized how much more i love the laundry end of it without having to stuff pockets! :banghead

Hubby refused to do prefolds in the beginning but now he's so used to them. I hate to go back to stuffing pockets. But prefolds are tough on a wiggly baby. My aplix got really bad on my pockets so I'm converting them to snaps. I like snaps better, though aplix is quicker on a wiggly baby, and they can't undo them by themselves.

My favorite favorite might be fitteds and covers though. It's the best of both worlds to me I think. no folding, but easy laundry!! I got a trial edition of the bumgenius fitteds in cotton and I love them! They do take a little longer to dry but not much, so I don't mind.

Thirsties are my favorite cover I think because of the gusset and the exposed PUL on the inside.

I really like the idea of woolies, but I don't like pulling them on and off like pants or shorts with a wet or poo diaper underneath - I'd rather have them wrap on like a cover - and I never found the time to wash them separately. :-/

We always used GMD prefolds with a variety of covers, but my neighbor has turned me on to trying pockets. They aer SO trim! I couldn't even tell her ds was wearing cloth when I held him the other day. :rockon

So Im subbing here and hoping to get some pockets for this newest little bundle. It's been about 18mos since I've used cloth...gotta get back into the hang of it!

MiriamRose

:giggle Didn't mean to spoil your groove. They are much cheaper than pockets though, so you could always try one or two before committing to a larger stash of them. I loved my pockets at first too but the love faded after several months of wear when they really started to wear out and I had problem after problem with stink, with the microfiber. So it's back to cotton for me. :yes

All I know at this point is that I really dislike velcro. Few of my Bummis or Thirsties covers have been much use with DD2. :-/ Looking for some ideas!

Now see, I loved velcro. I could never get a perfect fit w/ snaps, and if the velcro wore out, it was easy enough to replace. :shrug3 Good thing there's so many options!

MaybeGracie

I still love prefolds with a Snappi and a wool cover. :tu We use Fuzzi Bunz pockets for naps and for when we're out of the house.

WingsOfTheMorning
10-05-2011, 06:16 PM
Yeah, I replaced all the velcro on my Bummis and I don't think the PUL will hold up to another round. And they never stay stuck to the tabs in the washer, so the velcro stuck to the edges of the gussets and tore them up (especially the Thirsties). But it seems when I asked about this back when I was using them with DD1, no one else has this problem. :shifty

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled thread... :D

Codi

How old are the diapers? :think They do only have a certain "shelf life" if you will, before they just wont work any longer, right?

WingsOfTheMorning
10-05-2011, 06:27 PM
I used the smalls for about 5 months with DD1. I haven't used them a ton this time since for various reasons we ended up using a lot of disposables so far. The gussets on the Thirsties are really torn up.

I used medium Bummis for over a year with DD1 and replaced the velcro once during that time. I threw them out when she grew out of them b/c the replaced velcro wasn't sticking anymore.

So what is considered the average shelf life of a cover?

We started with prefolds and covers for DS and then built up our pocket stash. Recently I fell in love with fitteds. I like prefolds and fitteds the best, but for DS's current size we have pockets and some fitteds. I haven't found a cover I love yet, but I did get some Thirsties Duos for the new baby and am working on knitting some wool. I would love to transition to all natural fibers, but the pckets are great for babysitters/family.
For the new baby I've bought a bunch of fitteds and have a variety of covers to try.
Favorite pocket: Rumparooz, hands down. Too bad they're pricey.
Favorite prefolds: GMD
Favorite fitted: I like Happy Heiny and Bumboo the most out of what we use now.
Favorite cover: The Imse Vimse we have never fit DS well, but I liked it the most based on style. I just wished the tabs would overlap.

ETA: Velcro vs Snaps? I like and dislike both. Velcro gets a tighter fit but it doesn't hold up. Snaps last so much longer but can be tricky for fitting. I dp prefer snaps overall because they last longer.

BG 4.0s stuffed with Flip Organic inserts for our super soaker. We love, love, love anything BG and are very loyal to them. Microfiber isn't absorbent enough for us anymore and I don't like touching it anyway.

We also have four Grovia AIOs that are okay.

For night time, our system is a bit excessive but she pees like crazy and it holds more than a sposies can. We use a bamboo MotherEase Sandys fitted, with a Motherease stay dry liner, a Joeykicks hemp insert, and a MotherEase Airflow cover. Ugliest darn thing in the world but it's the best solution we can come up w/ for her since she pees like crazy.

We've been using sposies at night because he keeps leaking through cloth and then waking up in the middle of the night. With the sposie he hasn't leaked (yet) and thus sleeps better (still wakes occasionally, but it doesn't require an outfit and diaper change).

i love fitteds with wool. my favorite fitteds are sustainable babyish. they have bullet proof woolies too, although they are super expensive, so i only have a couple. i am working on making some longies for this winter, and maybe a couple wool pieces for the new baby due in january, but i am a slow knitter.

we have always used an loved bumgenius for going out, but lately they have been leaking. i am trouble shooting to see if it's the diapers wearing out (but they are not that old!), the kid peeing more, or the mama's sloppy stuffing job that is causing the leaks, but i will be sad if we are just not able to use them anymore.

awesome thread! my lovely BG OS pockets (yes...bought new for dd, a good 4 years ago..they are 2.0!) have been our stable. but now, after 3 babies, the velcro is so weak. he must wear pants or the diaper falls right off. and i would love to replace them all, as we are (praying!) for a new lo.

Erica we are like baby twins, except a month apart! My first lo was born Jan 10 and my next one is going to be Jan 12! :) We also LOVE Sbish covers here - I get mine from diaper swappers...love scouring that site for deals!!! I got all my nb woolies from there. Can't WAIT to try them on :melt
DS wore two pairs of Sbish longies all winter last year (rolled up about 3 inches) - so much that people asked if he only had two pairs of pants ;) And this year - THEY STILL FIT! I am so beyond thrilled. :jump2

If the diapers are still usable except for the velcro, you could always have them snap converted! Or, BG sells the refresher kits w/ new velcro tabs for $1/each! Just an idea. :)

I'm only a few months in here but enjoying myself so far. I have fuzzibunz OS and prefolds/covers, it seems like the prefolds hold more pee so I tend to use the fuzzibunz later in the day (and those are the only type Dh will use). I want to get into wool soon. I like to browse and I can see how this could become an expensive hobby :shifty but I need to keep it cheap.

That is just my LEAST favorite thing about cloth. The bulk. So the trimmer the better for me!

I like the bulk because I have a skinny baby. :giggle There are only a few clothing brands that make clothes that fit my babies, so the extra fluff helps keep the pants on.

Stiina

Have you found diaperswappers, Amy? It can still get expensive, but you can find great wool there for a fraction of the price. It just makes you justify buying more. :giggle

I love Kawaii one size pockets with the snaps. I had used prefolds and Dappi covers for two of my other kids, but my dh was not impressed and didn't want to deal with it and preferred disposables. When I bought the Kawaii's for this last baby, he was sold and gladly participates in the cloth diapering.

I really like Swaddlebees Econappies, Softbums, and Blueberrys, all aplix. I have a few fitteds and a Bummis cover I like for laundry day. I can't seem to get the hang of snaps. I liked prefolds and fitteds when DD2 was a newborn, but now I need the quicker pockets and AI2's since she is so wiggly! And DH likes the pockets better. I don't mind stuffing... its kind of relaxing for me :shrug3

We use all Rumparooz and we love them. The solid colors are beautiful, they're easy to wash and we've had no problems.

The rise is kind of short. LO is a tall baby so the rise is already fully unsnapped at five months old :nails but there's still room in the waist adjustment. I suppose if he grows out of them we'll just jump in to EC!

Wow! This thread is very helpful for me. We just started in the summer (our LO is 5 months) and have been using BumGenius 4.0 AIOs (we got them all on clearance) and they have been wonderful so far. Right now we use them more than the BG pocket diapers with the snaps, mostly because they fit her better. I figure we will probably have to replace the velcro at some point, but I really like them so far :shrug3

I love GMD Workhorse fitteds. Simple, basic, absorbent cotton. :heart

For nights, I use Under the Nile or BSRB, because ds is such a super-soaker.

As for covers, we use flip and econobum when it comes to PUL, and a variety of interlock and upcycled wool when I can afford to splurge. *cough*taxrefund*cough*
