going to use prefolds this time around. how may covers do I need? Thirsties or bummis better? Do I wash the covers with the diaper. Do I have to change the cover with each change?

Four covers should do ya, if you are washing every other day. I like Thirsties better than Bummies because of the leg gussets. They also seemed softer. You only have to change the covers if they get poop on them or just feel like it is time to give them a wash.

I was going to say 5 covers, but other than that I agree 100%.

Yeah - 4-6 is what I like. Depends on your level of mad prefoldin' skillz.

4-6, and I'd go for the Thirsties Duo covers.

I needed extra covers because I definitely do not have the mad prefolding skills :giggle But I started with 6 and things went just fine.

I'm in the 6 cover club. I didn't really like thirsties for some reason. But Bummi's SWW were great and I hear that Bummi's Super Brites are even better (gussets). And I think next time I'll try the Super Lite!

I like thirsties waaaay better than bummi's. Way better. Even with the super brights leg gussets, IMO thirsties are more pliable and soft.

I have 5-6 covers. I go through maybe 1 or 2 per day, depending on blowouts. :giggle

I'm so grateful to be cloth diapering right now... It's saving us so much money!!!

I would recommend 6 covers. I like the Thirsties duos and the Bummis Super brites, which have those dandy leg gussets too. ;)

Not to scare you but Gracie was 3 (and out of diapers) before she slept 5 hour stretches at night. :lol

I like bummies.

:shiver

both my other kids were doing six hour stretches by seven weeks and 12 hours by three months.

So far we are getting four hour stretches here at night, I'm *hoping* it increases, but know with breastfed babies it isn't always that predictable. He does seem to be following the same patterns that the other two did, so I'm hopeful though. Also aware I could be polyanna too ;)

I'd say 5 is a good number. We don't change the cover with each nappy change, just if the cover gets pooey or a bit too wet, so some days each child only uses 1 cover, other days they might go through 3 each! We just wash the covers in with the nappies every 2 or 3 days.

You can back up your diaper cover stash with a cheap pack of grocery store Gerber vinyl covers.

Also, any 100% polyester clothing has a great chance of being a good wicking barrier w/o a cover.

I've never used Thirsties, but I've used Bummis and they seem to work fine.

I only change the cover when it gets pooped on or if it starts to kinda smell like pee.

If your sleep hopes don't materialize, you might get a couple pockets for nighttime use.

I think I am going to get 6. Just in case... Better to have a clean one in the drawer than four dirty ones in the diaper pail~

i started with 6, too. especially with tiny baby breastmilk poop, the more, the better!

You could always add a fleece liner for dryness while sleeping!

I will use sposies at night! I hated cloth at night with my older two

My preference for sleeping

#1:Sposies
#2: wool cover + pre-fold.

I didn't do well adding absorbent layers at night to use a not-wool cover. I'd end up making the shape awkward and the pee would just run out instead of finding the extra layers.
