okay i know 8 oz = 1 cup, but here is my issue. i am making split pea soup and all the recipes are based off of a 16 oz pkg. those packages seem like they have more than 2 cups in it tho, i don't have a pkg here, i just bought some bulk split peas. sooo how many cups are in a 16 oz pkg of peas? is the 16 oz referring to volume or weight?? anyone have a pkg they want to measure??

8 oz of water by weight AND volum is 1 cup. This will also apply to most liquids as well as the specific gravity doesn't vary much. However, with something like peas, 8 oz by volume (i.e., 1 cup) may weight more than 8 oz.

If someone has a package of split peas in a package, maybe they can measure them and see how many cups there are for the weight stated on the package.

hope you figured it out. I just made split pea soup this week! It was extra yummy because I decided to put some bacon in it!

Here's roughly the "recipe" I used:

4 cups vegetable broth
2 cups water
1 pound of dried peas
1 sauteed onion, 4 sauteed garlic cloves, 3 chopped sauteed carrots, sauteed minced kale (maybe about 1 cup)
1/2 pound crisp bacon

made in the slowcooker all day.
