Yep, the Baby Book by Sears is my go-to source, especially in the first year.

For more detailed information, I love the Your X year old books by Ames & Ilges.

It covers from birth to age two. They (the Sears) also have a discipline book that covers what toddlers / children are able to understand from birth to age 10. It includes topics like Getting Connected from birth to One Year; Understanding Ones, Twos and Threes; Taming Temper Tantrums, Building Self Esteem; Helping Your Child Express Feelings; Shaping Behavior.

I've found both books to be particularly helpful so far :)

For babies, I really wanted The Wonder Weeks (http://www.thewonderweeks.com/) But I never bought it. I did have The Baby Book by Dr Sears and found it helpful.

For older kids, definitely Ames & Ilg! I've found nearly all of them at Goodwill or other thrift stores, so keep your eyes peeled! :)

I bought the Wonder Weeks, and I highly recommend it. :yes I'm going to refer to it again this time around. It goes only through the first year, but it's SOOOOO useful with a baby! Especially as a first time mom!

Your Baby and Child by Penelope Leach is good too, and it goes through age 5.

That's the best I can do. Good child development books are hard to come by. :(
