I want to replace some very cheap play dishes that had small parts. Dd's birthday is in two weeks and I wanted to get her some safe play dishes.

Anyone know of some great brands? Have a favorite?

I was thinking maybe these (though I'll have to put the utensils away for choking hazards) but they are recycled material and cheaper than wooden. :think

I was going to suggest the Green Toys tea set - it looks like they have more options for dishes now. Cool! We don't have any of the Green Toys items, but a friend of mine likes the tea set for her DD.

Thanks! I've seen them in stores and they seem well made. Wooden or enamel dishes are just so expensive. Had I thought ahead of time I would have saved for them. :O

Dd saw the wooden kitchens in Mothering magazine and really wants one so I'm going to start saving for next Christmas. We have a small plastic one we got on sale when she was little and no one ever wants to play with it. :giggle Craigslist here it comes!

We got our girls the Green toys tea set last year and the larger dish set this year. It's actually quite nice - sturdy and sized well for little hands. I love the fact that they are of completely of recycled materials.

The Green Toys set looks nice. We have one of their trucks and Punkin is loving it.
I was also going to suggest the Plan Toys set. It's the one we have.

But, they are more expensive and you don't get as much.

Another vote for the Green Toys stuff. DD has the tea set and LOVES it. It's super sturdy and really cute, and she plays with it all the time! :rockon

Do you have an Ikea anywhere nearby? They have great play dishes:

We do! :) Is there stuff generally considered safe? I'd never thought of that before! :tu

It's all tested as 'food safe' so you can actually prepare food with the 'play' stuff and eat off of it. :tu

The only thing I'd caution is the coffee/tea set and the plate/bowl set are actual stoneware. They are very sturdy, and we haven't had a problem with them falling on carpeted areas, but I would't use them over hardwood/laminate/tile. They recommend 8+ for the stoneware, and 3+ for the metal/polycarbonate stuff.

We have the metal pots and pans, and DH has totally used it to make food before, lol. :rockon

AFA dishes go, though, I haven't wanted to get the stoneware because DD sometimes likes to throw things. :shifty So no glass for us, at least for now.

I find that most of Ikea's toys are really well made, using almost no plastic, and usually not in China -- and they are really reasonably priced. Almost all of DD's favorite toys are from Ikea!

the green toys tea set was an amazon lightning deal last month...i got it for dd for $9.99 with free ship. i know that won't help you now...but i would definatly watch out this year, especially if you are going to do a play kitchen :)

we gave her the tea set for her birthday sun and i love it...she does too.

I'd forgotten about the Ikea toys! We have some of those, too (the metal pots and pans and the plastic goblets.) My kids just love playing kitchen and tea party. They can't get enough of it!

My grandmother gave Pepper a porcelain tea set last year and even though I tried to set it up the situation so that she didn't break things, she still dropped pieces and broke a bunch. eh, well. So we went to Ikea and got her some things because my tupperware and mixing bowls were spending more time in the play kitchen than the real one. Then I found Green Toys. :rockon I want to get them the pots and pans set, too. I like to play with the stuff!

That stuff is ADORABLE! And the tea set comes with tea bags and sugar! Too cute.

I was going to suggest these as well. FWIW P is only 3 and she's doing fine with the stoneware dishes. If you have a thrower though I would avoid these as they are relatively heavy.

I did a search on Ikea and it says that their safety standards are very high (through a secondary reviewer). All their plastics are BPA/Vinyl free and they are strick about other hazards and chemicals in all their products. So that's good! :tu
