I'm enrolling Sophia in the Kodiak Regional Learning Center, which (as I have burbled about before) is going to provide $1,600 to me for her kindergarten year and give Sophia full access to all school district facilities. I was surprised and relieved that the homeschool coordinator didn't ask me my reasons for homeschooling during our interview. It isn't a question in the paperwork either. But get this: Somebody I know who just enrolled her son says that the school district isn't just cool with homeschooling; the coordinator told her that they are happy when parents decide to HS their kids because every child learning at home is one less in the classroom. It's a way to reduce the student-teacher ratio without having to scrape up the extra money for more teachers and classroom space.
It almost seems too good to be true.
