At that age, in middle school, there is often an increased emphasis on composition and grammar, because their brains are maturing to where they can really make a lot more progress thinking about the structure and rules of those things compared to where the main goal in elementary is simply comprehension and eventually understanding story structure. So, some schools will schedule "reading" as one class, and a second class of composition and grammar as "language arts." The district I worked for did that, and used the same teacher for both, so there could be some overlap...writing an essay about the story they just read, etc. So, they saw the English teacher twice as often as math, science, history. REading is a receptive skill, language arts class is the productive elemets.
