They are fastened to the wall with the brackets ($5 fancy brackets at Lowes) and then the back is screwed to the wall for extra security (each bracket and screw MUST go through a stud- they're heavy with all those books!) I walked in today and 2yo DS was hanging, literally- feet off the ground, hanging on one of them. I am SO glad we hung them that securely! :whew (still scared me though!)

with three small brackets underneath and wood screws through the top back part to stabilize them
