Nevermind, I know why now. I just went back and read the caption under Focus on the Family. "Tim is also a speaker for their Life on the Edge tour, a conference for parents and their teens."

I don't think he raised his kids entirely without spanking them. He never really takes a stand against spanking. In some ways, it seems like that debate is not on his radar, like he doesn't realize the full impact of his own message. Also, in some of his other books, he seems to have been specifically given a message for parents who have raised their children punitively, and now have teenagers, and need help rescuing their families.
