I've heard that it's tricky here to do. Do you "have" to use a curriculum through a charter school or you can use your own? How do you register as a private school? Any good links for info about this in CA?! Thanks! :grouphug

It depends on which charter. We use Eagle's Peak and chose our own curriculum. We actually unschool, so we're not using the curriculum we chose too much. They pay for dd gymnastics, though, and that's huge.

:popcorn I'm curious too. We moved to CA a couple of months ago and are planning on homeschooling too.

This may be helpful: http://californiahomeschool.net/howTo/legOpt.htm It has a description of the various ways that you can legally homeschool in CA and the pros and cons of each.

These have info on how to file a private school affadavit (R-4) which is fairly easy: http://californiahomeschool.net/howTo/psa.htm and http://californiahomeschool.net/howTo/filing.htm. If there weren't a good charter school in my area then I would probably file an R-4. However, I'll be using the same charter school as Marcella, Eagles Peak. They serve San Diego County, Orange County, Riverside County, and Imperial County. It's possible that things could change in the future at which point I may file an R-4 but for now I'm ok with the level of choice allowed, funding and resources available, and the amount of paperwork necessary and other requirements. We'll take it year by year.

Here is a link to information from CHEA of CA:

You do not need to register with a charter, you can be your own private school. Hope this helps.
