I just found a box full of old receiving blankets (the flannelette kind) secondhand for $3.50. I made TWO DOZEN dipes and a couple dozen wipes. For three fifty!! They're just pre-fold style, as I have the sewing skills of a first grader, but I am so thrilled with this cheap source of dipes. Yippee for me and my frugality!! :clap :clap :clap :mrgreen :mrgreen :mrgreen

OH you are so cool! Especially considering that while you sew like a 1st grader...I am not even THAT good..yet. ;)

i made preemie sized prefolds for jonas out of old flannel sheet, i was extremely proud! I used them for a month, maybe... now they are handy for spit up :)
Way to go!

What pattern did you use (if any)? I just found a bunch of old receiving blankets in some stuff that a friend gave me for baby and I thought of doing the same thing.

There is a pattern on www.borntolove.com but it is super easy - I just laid a preexisting prefold on top of the receiving blanket for size (lengthwise), then cut off any of the blanket that was longer than the diaper. (cut with pinking shears or you will have to hem the end of the diaper - she doesn't mention this on BTL.com) This leaves you with a long narrow strip of cloth and the blanket, which becomes the main part of the diaper. Fold the strip either in half or thirds and lay it on the blanket lengthwise down the middle. Fold the blanket in toward the middle to create a "prefold" diaper [|] Either zigzag or plain stitch down the center (plain stitch you should go up and back a couple of times for security) to sandwich the strip of blanket inside the folded blanket. They seem thin but are actually pretty absorbant once you get them folded in thirds and inside the cover of your choice. . .I am really bad at giving directions but this seems to make sense to me. Let me know any ?'s, ok?

I'm going to give it a try - I figure why not if the receiving blankets were free, right?

Thanks for the offer to answer questions - I'll probably have some!
