Hi! Do you have a favorite site for freebies? Free work pages, etc? :)

Lots of educational books for children free online:
http://www.mainlesson.com/main/displayarticle.php?article=feature

Every time I go to the site, they've added books.
Some titles:
The Iliad for Boys and Girls
Stories from Ancient Rome by Alfred Church
Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans by Edward Eggleston
Viking Tales by Jennie Hall
Heroes Every Child Should Know by Hamilton Wright Mabie

Ooops, I wasn't done yet and I clicked "post!"

The Story of France by Mary Macgregor
Stories of Beowulf Told to the Children by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall
American History Stories by Mara L. Pratt
Stories of the Pilgrims by Margaret B. Pumphrey

Many of these are living books. You can see a complete listing at http://www.mainlesson.com/displaybooksbyauthor.php

I like the yahoo groups I'm a member of: "Clickschooling" and "0 Homeschool Reviews"
Clickschooling is nice because the moderator just sends you a site a day M-F and you can take it or leave it. She has sent some pretty cool stuff that I would not have thought to look for.
The review site is nice because in addition to being able to ask other parents for suggestions, you can search the archives and find what you are looking for. It's nice when you can help someone else out too when you know of a really helpful site.
In both cases the suggested sites are absolutely free.

No time to type much, but I love www.amblesideonline.org It is a free, online, Charlotte Mason curriculum. I know this isn't probably exactly what you meant, but wanted to plug it anyway because it is so fantastic. The advisory ladies who created it are all just regular hsing moms who give tons of their time and absolutely refuse any $$. :heart

Free poetry http://www.theotherpages.org/poems/index.html
Free links to classical music http://classicalwebcast.com/onepage.htm

I'll see what else I might have for younger kids.

They have lots of free downloads for helping children read/write, and very cool, fun notebooks/workbooks that they sent us for free a few years ago...looks like they may charge a small fee for them now....less than two dollars! We have the Level One Reading and Writing Journal (block print) and the Cut-Up Books that include learning about great art masters like Van Gogh....absolutely wonderful stuff! :mrgreen

http://www.wowio.com

Sponsored by Verizon, this site allows 5 free ebook downloads per day, once you become a member (also free).

I have downloaded several books on Ancient Egypt/Rome/Greece that are required or suggested for our curriculum (Winter Promise QAW). They have textbooks, activity books, fiction, poetry, encylopedias, etc...all are actual "books" in pdf format (so far anyway) and like the library, a few books may have questionable content, but you do not have to download any book you do not want.

These are not public domain books, they are mostly books that are current (well, from what I have downloaded only one was published more than 5 years ago). The site is updated almost daily with new materials.

Found some today that I want to keep track of, and to share! Grace is really into dinosaurs and I was looking for an incentive chart to print to use with her (we're working on "listening the first time" lol). I stumbled across these other great resources at the same time!

http://www.kidzone.ws/ Includes free printable worksheets and flashcards for reading, math, geography, etc. as well as unit studies on specific animals

http://internt.nhm.ac.uk/jdsml/nature-online/dino-directory/ Info about hundreds of different kinds of dinosaurs, ideas for uses in the classroom (such as math, ordering, writing, reading, etc), photos, where in the world the different kinds can be found, etc.

http://www.ziggityzoom.com/activities.php Preschool games, stories, activities, and printables

http://www.tooter4kids.com/free_worksheets_and_awards.htm Worksheets and Awards and links to other sites on a lot of different subjects, many of the sites (like kidzone above) are multi-grade level friendly so you can do the same unit study w/ different age children at the same time on their own levels.

I know that many children/ families are fans of the audio based Adventures in Odyssey.
There are many web-based audio shows. There is a huge list I found, but some are soapoperas that are geared for adults so I won't put that list here. However, I will post the ones geared for children and add to the list as I find more.

http://imaginationlane.net/shows.html

Here is their list on story guidelines:

"Family Friendly / Clean Feed
These need to be released on a clean feed and be safe for the entire family as well as conservatives. This means:
- No swearing (not even OMGs)
- No mature situations / sexual references
- No detailed graphic violence "

This is a volunteer based audio drama. I would personally say that it is geared for "middle school" age children on up with parents, I listened to one of the stories in the Imagination Backroads series which was very well done.

Here is a children's radio link site many of which are Christian based:

MEP math (http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm) - Pre-K through high school. British program based on Hungarian approaches to teaching math - very conceptual, full of thinking, puzzle-type problems.

CSMP (http://ceure.buffalostate.edu/~csmp/CSMPProgram/index.html) - K-6. Very unique conceptual math program, comes out of the original New Math of the 60s. Has math storybooks, very hands-on in younger years - feels like a bunch of mathematicians got together and tried to make arithmetic fun :giggle.

KISS Grammar (http://home.pct.edu/~evavra/KISS.htm) - free grammar program that has a big picture approach, and uses passages from literature for analysis.

http://macmillanmh.com/languagearts/2001/teacher/teachres/workbooks.html - not sure if this has been mentioned already but these look like nice language arts printables.

I have only looked at the K and 1st grade levels but they seem nice if you have a little worksheet lover. I moved them to the ipad for a traveling option.

Oh, hey, look, a listing of free K12 curricula, including things I never found on Google! The PreK & Kinder tab lists everything I spent several days Googling up in the Lesson Plans forum :doh.

I just browsed a bunch of the samples and this looks like a great integrated language arts curriculum. You can order the printed version but the PDF's of the entire program are FREE!
