hermit crabs?
Ds 1 lost his hamster last week and is ready to try something else (that was his third hamster). He's asking for hermit crabs (which work for the simple fact that we have the right cage). What do I need to know? Links for good info?

Re: hermit crabs?
Dd Heather (ShiriChayim) kept them for quite a while. A pm to her might prove insightful

Re: hermit crabs?
This is a great care sheet from a trusted resource. The Hermit Crab Association is the best place you can go for answers; they have a good summary page as well.
I've raised hermit crabs since I was in high school. We currently have four of them. They can be great pets but they do require more care than most pet stores would lead you to believe. What kind of cage do you have? A hamster cage won't provide sufficient levels of humidity; you'll need an aquarium with a solid (glass or plexi-glass) cover.

Re: hermit crabs?
We have a solid plexiglass aquarium and we can fully cover the top as well.
Right now we have a light, "tropical soil", a nicely sized (biggish and deepish) bathing/water bowl, water conditioner (I can often taste chlorine in our tap water), hamster pellets. I'll go check out those recommendation links.

Re: hermit crabs?
DH wants one for DS, who loves crabs. I am daunted by the work involved. If you do it right they live forever (20+ years!), if you don't they die. I hate killing anything, so I'm afraid.
We've had other small caged pets. I think the rats were easiest and most enjoyable. |
