What do you think about this book list on Women Living Well?
http://womenlivingwell [DOT] org/2012/07/my-list-of-excellent-christian-parenting-books/
(broken) Teach Them Diligently / Priolo Grace Based Parenting / Kimmel The Mission of Motherhood / Clarkson Creative Correction / Whelchel The Heart of Anger / Priolo Give Them Grace / Fitzpatrick and Thompson Successful Christian Parenting / John MacArthur The Power of a Praying Parent / Omartian Have a New Kid By Friday / Leman Shepherding a Child's Heart / Tripp Don't Make Me Count To Three / Plowman A Mom After God's Own Heart / Elizabeth George The Ministry of Motherhood / Clarkson The Five Love Languages of Children / Chapman & Campbell The Duggars: 20 And Counting! / Duggar Saw it shared by someone on facebook. The choices seem like a random collection of parenting books but the person who made the list apparently loves them all. Which ones would you consider anti-GBD? I have only read parts of Creative Correction (the parts I read creeped me out: she is gleeful about getting back at her kids "creatively" (read: abusively and arbitrarily), and skimmed through The Power of a Praying Parent (as I recall she is another gleeful punisher but you have to read between the lines to get that; heavy on kids-as-sinners.) I remember liking Have a New Kid By Friday, but I read it early on and probably wouldn't like much of it now. Which of these books do you think are the best/worst of the bunch?

Re: What do you think about this book list on Women Living Well?
My guess is that the author of that blog read those books through a very thick filter, and at different times/places in her parenting journey.
I have not read them all, and many of them I would not ever read, but of that list, my favorites are the Clarkson books and...on second thought, I just like the Clarkson books. I have not read the Kimmel book, but I am assuming by the title it would be GBD leaning. I am not a love language person, or I would think that one would be good as well. Plowman, while I do like her "Wise Words for Moms", is very punitive in that book. We all know about Tripp and Whelchel. I do not know anything about the others.

I would say Tripp and Plowman are some of the worst. Sally Clarkson is great.
I don't have experience with the other authors, but I'm sure others will chime in.

Re: What do you think about this book list on Women Living Well?
I have seen a number of mixed lists like this various places online. It's rather interesting. (by interesting I mean strange ) The other trends I notice with parenting book lists is either a bunch of punitive titles mixed with Sally Clarkson or a bunch of grace based titles along with Tripp.

Yeah, I've come across folk who love both Pearl and Sally Clarkson. Strange, but it happens.

Re: What do you think about this book list on Women Living Well?
The author of that post is pro-spanking and embraces the "children need to be trained to be good" mindset. No offens intended to Courtney at all You could do a search on her blog and get an idea of her views.
A good book, oddly missing, is the OTHER Clarkson book (Heartfelt Discipline) that Clay wrote. He's rewriting/editing it and it's supposed to be released again soon (fall?) But I'm sure she would not agree with his conclusions. The Clarkson books and the Five Love Lanugages are the only GBD on that list, I believe. |

Re: What do you think about this book list on Women Living Well?
Someone gave me Give Them Grace. I haven't read it all, but the parts I have read were horrible. The first section I read talked about how no one is able to follow any parts of the law unless the Holy Spirit does it for them so we should never praise our children for obeying. Basically "you are a terrible sinner and could never do anything right, but praise God he allowed you to share your toy! You are so selfish you'd never do that on your own, so thank Jesus that he kept you from a spanking this time!" horrible.
