Church is doing class on GKGW

:mad:sick
So my church is thinking about doing a parenting class using Growing Kids Gods Way. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
Fortunately I don't think it is set in stone yet and they don't really know much about it- it just got recommended to them by someone. Also the people in my church are really very good with kids in day to day interactions- they (in general) love kids and are very easy going about age appropriate behavior. I think that once they hear some of the concerns they will change their minds. A fellow GCMer :heart already gave them the link to the ezzo.info site so hopefully they read it. I am going to bring up the fact that they were kicked out of their church and their kids don't have any contact with them. Hoping those issues make everyone think twice.

I hope they decide to use something else.

Oh dear! I do hope they will research this and change their minds.

Would meet with pastor and or whoever is in charge of coordinating the classes armed with info and your concerns. What you aid about them not knowing much about it is very telling

The thing that got Gary Ezzo 'uninvited' to my church many, many years ago was when I told the pastor 'since your kids are grown, you might not know this, but this material is pretty controversial and many people would never think of visiting a church where his name was or had been on the church sign'.

I think you'd find they'll backtrack pretty quickly if you let them know it's controversial.

It might be helpful to offer a few alternatives.

www.ezzo.info is a treasure of info.

Gentle Firmness, by Stephanie Cox, is good.

I meant for classes.

There are some others on video that come with question prompts.

I liked Ray W. Lincoln's class.

Oh, ok. I thought it was like a book discussion.

Re: Church is doing class on GKGW

I remember a GCM that posted about Babywise right after I joined. She read the books and did what she thought was cio because she let her baby cry in the crib while she patted the baby's back until he or she fell asleep. She only did it if she rocked the baby to sleep first or something like that. She still fed her baby on demand, she answered her baby's cries and all the things that should be done, she did.
I knew a couple of women that read the books and thought okay, I can do this and then had their babies and decided to modify it greatly and still thought they followed the book.
Don't let this leave you feeling discouraged. Your church sounds like they would just take what works and leave the rest in the worst case.

Talked to pastor about it and he had no idea about issues with it. He was going to check into it. On phone right now. bbl

Yikes. I had no idea that this was even still around. We went through it at our church 18 years ago and it was very damaging. :( Praying that your concerns can turn this around!

Good for you for saying something! Really hoping they'll reconsider :/ I have only recently learned of this Babywise stuff and a lot of it really scares me!
