Bananas make my mouth burn
Bananas make my mouth have that itchy burn. You know like when you have a bug bite and you scratch it but now it burns, but still itches? It's like that. Does that mean I'm developing an allergy? It seems to only affect my mouth after eating.
Now for the first time, I have the same itch after eating a granola bar, but it doesn't have banana in it. Are there other plants that are similar to bananas that would cause the same reaction? None of the ingredients jump out at me (no kiwi, pineapple, avocado etc)

Re: Bananas make my mouth burn
I'm not sure what's in the granola bar, but watch out for latex Latex allergy and banana allergy go hand in hand. It is absolutely possible to develop an allergy later in life. I'd stop eating bananas and get to the Dr. for allergy testing, if I were you.

Re: Bananas make my mouth burn
It could be related to a latex allergy, or to a birch or ragweed allergy. This past summer, I discovered that I have developed an allergy to avocado, which is related to a birch allergy (to which I must be allergic because my seasonal allergies are worst when birch pollen is high). It's called an Oral Allergy Syndrome--my whole mouth starts to feel really itchy, and it does burn a bit.

Re: Bananas make my mouth burn
There are a few things that do that to me as well If I keep eating them, my tongue and throat start to swell Ethan complained of the same thing recently when he tried a bite of peanut butter. Definitely allergies in our case... And there are some that are recent for me and I'm in my mid-30s

Re: Bananas make my mouth burn
Camomile is another one that tends to cause problems for people with banana allergies.

Re: Bananas make my mouth burn
Avocados are also related to banana and latex allergies.

well....I'll keep drinking it till it burns my mouth too...and I'll cut down on banana consumption. I typed stop first, but I think I'd be lying. I went to the store this morning and did not buy any. I think that's a great first step.

Re: Bananas make my mouth burn
Happened to me at 32 years old. Be very careful, latex allergies are like peanut and trea nut allergies, they get bad FAST. I ate banana pudding one day and was immediately allergic when I had never been before. However, I thought I was exposed to tree nuts and didn't connect it was the banana. Less than a week later, I ate a banana and went into an anaphylactic reaction.
I am NOW highly allergic to latex and bananas. I can still eat avacados but they sting a bit. Since my allergies developed in connection with pregnancies, I'm kind of banking on the avocados staying a sensitivity and not an allergy--very bad, I know. It's just avocados were my favorite food after tree nuts and I'm too stubborn to give it up when it's not an allergy yet. |
