Default can almonds cause constipation?

My dd2 (10) is having awful constipation & is usually very regular. The only difference is she has been eating almonds.

I googled it, got one hit with someone saying they cause them constipation and 'brain fuzz.' but others saying they are good.

So, anyone have trouble with this? Is it some kind of food intolerance?

now that I think about it, she talks about drinking almond milk at night making her stomach hurt.

hmmmmmm

Every time somebody in our family has indulged in almonds it has had the opposite effect. I thought that they were known for their laxative effect.

Either way I would try cut out the almonds for a while and see if it makes any difference.

If the almond milk is also causing stomach pain it might warrant eliminating it in general. How has her water intake been?

Store-bought almond milk usually has thickeners like xanthan gum or carrageenan, which aren't very good for you. It's not hard to make your own if you have a Vita-Mix.

Have you tried soaking the almonds? They're easier to digest if they've been soaked in a glass of water in the fridge for several hours. Make sure they're raw and don't have any strange oil on them. Roasting them makes them more difficult to digest as well.

Default Re: can almonds cause constipation? more & long

Thanks, ladies! She drinks lots of water.

Another odd thing, we had salmon last week and she said it made her stomach hurt. We've been trying to add fish a couple of times a month.

Also, for about a month and a half, she's told me she had some episodes of being dizzy. She describes dizzy as feeling like she is not there or that she is dreaming. I first tied this to spring sinus trouble, but I took her to the doctor Monday.

Everything seemed fine there, but if it keeps up the doctor wants us to come back. I think she is concerned about some kind of seizure activity because she called today and asked if dd2 has had any episodes of staring & not responding. (actually when she was 18 months old she had two significant episodes just like the doctor described, we went through a whole work up. All they could figure, since she had had a run of diarrhea is that it was tied to an electrolyte imbalance.)

So, I saw a google hit to almonds, constipation & brain frizz. And some other hits about high allergic reactions to fish and almonds.

So, I'm beginning to wonder if it is a bigger gut thing or a true allergic thing or something else?

I do like our doctors, so may follow up with them anyway.

This kiddo is generally super healthy.
