Default anyone know anything about the EverClean surface on toilets?

DH and I are buying fixtures for our new bathroom upstairs, which he and his dad are plumbing this weekend

We found a toilet at Lowe's that has this feature called an "EverClean Surface." I felt skeptical/wary, but this was the best toilet available, otherwise--the right shape/height/look/price.

Of course I want to know what it's made of. I don't want toxic chemicals on the toilet. The only info I can find about this surface is that it's "silver-based." The company (American Standard) website says:

Quote:
The EverClean surface is a silver-based, double-coat surface which inhibits the growth of stain and odor causing bacteria, mold and mildew on the surface. The super smooth mirror like surface is easier to keep clean, even after years of use.
Anyone heard of this or know anything more about it?

ETA: oops, thanks for moving this...I had a total brain-dead moment when thinking of where to put it and totally forgot about the Joyous Homekeeping forum

I'm not familiar with this exact product, but from the descriptions, I'm assuming that the "silver baked into the surface" substance is only inside the bowl.

I don't really see how you or your family would come into contact with it. The only thing I could potentially see that might spread this is if you flush with the lid up, which can spread germs and such around your bathroom. That's easy enough to solve in my opinion.

If you want more information on it, I would suggest calling a plumbing supply warehouse that sells american standard and asking them to call the rep or A.S. themselves and seeing what is actually in the baked on surface.

I worked in decorative plumbing for 4 years before kids -- I would also suggest going with the plumbing supply warehouse to buy the toilet and ask them if they can give you any deals that would compare to the big box store. Usually service and knowledge are so much better.

no, it's on the seat, not just in the toilet.

hmmm... usually the toilet seat is sold separately. I would double check -- if that's the case, you should be able to buy a similar size seat (elongated or round front) that does not have the coating -- possibly another brand. I would suggest plastic though -- it's more hygenic. Unless the seat is specific to that style (very unlikely) it shouldn't be an issue -- or just use your current seat if it's the same color.

it's definitely the seat, it says so right on the box: "The toilet and seat feature our exclusive EverClean surface which inhibits the growth of stain and odor causing bacteria, mold and mildew on the surface." everything we were looking at was sold all as one piece, I think. and there is no "current seat"--this is a new bathroom. I'd rather not have to buy an additional toilet seat if there's nothing really wrong or bad with this one... I dunno.
