How to oil cutting boards and wooden spoons?
Wood will dry out over time, so protecting those things with oil is a good idea. Mineral oil is recommended when I search, but is that a good idea considering you'll be consuming a little of whatever oil you use as you use your boards and utensils? Other oils will turn rancid after a while, although it seems refractionated coconut oil might not. What are your findings or feelings and how do you maintain your wood? Mine is dry and thirsty.

I like mixing oil with melted beeswax. It seems to stay better that way.

Re: How to oil cutting boards and wooden spoons?
I was going to ask and this reminded me. I have DH's grandmother's old wood rolling pin. It looks a bit rough, probably been a good decade since it was used. Should I do anything special to care for it?

Using the right oil will be good to preserve the rolling pin, MegMarch. I have my grandma's and should add it to my list of things to oil.

Re: How to oil cutting boards and wooden spoons?
How do you get by with going so long between? I find my self oiling my board at least once a week.

Re: How to oil cutting boards and wooden spoons?
They clean up just fine w/o it. The cutting board I use the most is bamboo. That one has never been oiled.
My wooden one hasn't been oiled in years. After using it, I wash it with hot soapy water and let it dry. If I think it needs it, I rinse it with boiling water. I'm reading that, if you don't oil them, they'll dry out and crack. Mine haven't. My biggest cutting board is over 20 years old. But maybe I'll oil them this week. |

Re: How to oil cutting boards and wooden spoons?
I have a bamboo cutting board, and I think the instructions that came with it said to use olive oil. I haven’t done it in a long time. I do avoid using that one for meat- cooked or raw. Just fruits, veggies, cheese.

Re: How to oil cutting boards and wooden spoons?
I'm thinking about how I use mine and I've never put raw meat on my cutting boards. I rarely cut raw meat and, if I do, I do it on a plate or platter and put it in the dishwasher. If I have a big roast, I scrub the cutting board really well with hot soapy water and then pour a teakettle of boiling water over the whole thing.
I should oil, them, too. Maybe today. We're stuck inside because of smoke. |
