When he wakes up, we're going to go to the park. Dh will bring his camera
My puppy is too skinny. Can you guys see it in his face? He's kind of emaciated. And Mr. Bultitude wasn't the laaaast in line, per se, but he wasn't one to fight for grub. He is very polite . Plus worming is hard on little puppy bodies, I think. So I'm feeding satin balls along with better (not corn based) dog kibble to help him get his weight up healthily. He is so sweet . Oh, I love him. I think he will start to look more saintly/bulky when he is a healthy weight. Poor little guy.

Look into how to feed a giant breed pup. Apparently it is more complex than with normal sized pups, growth plates and joints and blahblahblah madness.
He does look a bit thin, but.... my biggest dog was 63 pounds. I just have overheard enough chatter from giant owners to know proper feeding as babies is crazy important for their lifelong health.

And, lots of large breed pups have an awkward phase when they look emaciated.... they just can't eat enough to support the weight as they grow!
Definitely make sure he's eating a food formulated for large breed dogs, because it can seriously mess up growth plates and bone structure. He didn't look emaciated to me

Re: Coming out: We're getting a puppy (PICS ::grin::) (Edit: MORE pics, post 8 :giggl
I know that's true, and I have looked into feeding giant breeds. (A LOT ... my previous dog was a dane mix and he grew slowly and healthily to 120+ lbs.) I don't want him to grow too fast .
I'm glad he doesn't look emaciated in pictures ... but if you held him, I promise you would feel the same way. his bones are right on the surface and I can see them through his fuzz. When I gave him a bath once we got home, it was hard to look at. His haunches are REALLY ... haunchy. He's sooo boney . I do think it's possible that they swung just a little too far to the slow-grow side... to the point of not feeding quite enough. You guys made me feel better though . I'm just going to supplement him a little bit, til he's healthy, and then I will stop. ETA: Just for the record, I'm not trying to get him to be a MASSIVE puppy . My goal is just to not feel nothing but ribs when I pass my hand over his sides.

I wonder if you can give him some eggs or something to bulk him up a little?

Were Mama and Daddy dogs of good weight/size ?
Sometimes puppies , no matter how much you feed them , remain on the skinny side. (sorta like my children). As they mature they'll gain weight. |

This was my other dog who I considered a healthy, slender weight, for reference: I think he was 6-8 months in those photos? He did go through skinnier times and stockier times (he's stockier in these photos I have pictures of him all slender and grown, but I can't find any that are aimed more at weight. Its all like... his face ), and I never felt like he was unhealthy. I agree that it is unwise to try to bulk up a giant dog very fast or constantly feed them that way so that they grow too fast .
