For fun: pronouncing Apologia
How do you pronounce Apologia??
I've always pronounced it Ap-uh-LOW-gee-uh, but I had to call their customer service line and was DISTRAUGHT to hear them pronounce it Uh-PAW-low-GEE-uh. Am I the only one who has been pronouncing it wrong??

Re: For fun: pronouncing Apologia
I've always pronounced it Uh-PAH-low-GEE-uh. However, I heard it pronounced before I ever saw it written, I'm pretty sure. Also, I live in the south, so there's a chance we've gotten the pronunciation wrong.

Re: For fun: pronouncing Apologia
I pronounced it the way you heard on customer service because I relate the name to Christian apologist since their books have specifically 'why science is in agreement with scripture' content.

I also don’t know how to pronounce the word apologist because I have only seen it written and never heard it spoken.

Re: For fun: pronouncing Apologia
The way customer service pronounces it.
I just think of it like any word containing "olog" in it. The first "o" has the emphasis. Apologetic. Cardiology. Criminology. Aren't they all the same? I have always heard anything with the "olog" said with the emphasis on the first "o." Is there one that isn't? Now I sort of want to look up every "study of" thing there is and see. Also, why does apology (like to say "I'm sorry") use "olog" - what is an apology studying? BTW - I've never taken latin, so I know the "root" is probably not "olog" it is just the way I've broken down words in my own mind since I was a kid. |

Re: For fun: pronouncing Apologia
'Apologia' is Greek, and while I do give the letter G in "-ology" a soft sound (like 'gentle' )...Greeks don't really say their Gs that way. Maybe Ancient Greeks did? But 'apologia' isn't as much an Anglicized word and giving it a soft G sounds wrong to my ears...
I say it this way: https://youtu.be/d9yjCkY0yvg

Re: For fun: pronouncing Apologia
It has to do with the stress on the syllable. English generally puts the stress on the third to last syllable with a word like "apologia" (the way you were pronouncing it). So you were correct within standard English pronunciation/stress .
