Re: A comprehensive literature list for k-3rd
How do others implement books such as these? My kids have no interest in anything outside of picture books, and I don't know how to help them enjoy nonpicture books. Any ideas?

Re: A comprehensive literature list for k-3rd
I dunno, mine will listen to anything I read for as long as I will keep going but they might just be weird that way.
Right now I read several picture books a day and our current read aloud is the lion, the witch and the wardrobe and usbourne's classics for boys. I read several chapters a day. ---------- Post added at 02:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:42 AM ---------- Oh others they loved were, dr. Dolittle books, paddington bear, blue fairy book, wind in the willows and mr poppers penguins. I think I'm going to do something by kipling next. |

Re: A comprehensive literature list for k-3rd
Thanks- great list! Some I've heard of and some I haven't.
Any tips for finding unabridged/not-dumbed-down versions of these books? All the ones I seem to find are dumbed down, for a lot of them anyway like Heidi, the Jungle Book, Swiss Family Robinson, etc- lots of classics.

Re: A comprehensive literature list for k-3rd
Hmmm, I think most you can get on amazon? The free classic ones I've gotten for kindle (I have a kindle app on my iPad) have been unabridged as well.

Re: A comprehensive literature list for k-3rd
Joysworld- Maybe they are just not ready yet. Esp -If your child is really a visual learner.[sorry not wishing to de rail this wonderful thread ]Recently N [9 ] begged me to buy him this book
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Welcome-Alie...9063495&sr=1-1. Now I tried to talk him out of it .I couldnt see why he wanted it. I bought it - he was really happy, went home and read it to himself -lots. It was many weeks later when I read it to his little brother - that I suddenly saw what he got from the book. Its about a boy who -although human- was the alien at school. The school assumed that he knew exactly what was going on,they asked him spellings for words he couldnt know, asked him math sums in a language he didnt understand..expected him to know how everything worked . It was then I realised how much this was how he felt as a child with ASD in a regular school. It was like he had been dropped on an alien planet. He probably got so much from that book- and at the time I never realised it. I think the first Chapter book he enjoyed was the Owl and Billy Stories- and that had lots of secret hand signals in. Stanley liked my naughty little sister, and we started the Enchanted wood by Enid Blyton.

Re: A comprehensive literature list for k-3rd
Very good point! Mine are often playing while i read and it's not something I push. If I feel like they're not really listening then I put it down for another day. I also don't ask them to narrate or answer questions.

Barnes and Noble has many of the classic books in an unabridged version (Sterling unabridged classic series). I bought a few of these so far. I am using them for reading chapter books aloud. My goal is to basically collect the whole set. We are currently reading the Sterling Classics unabridged The Wonderful Wizard of Oz book. Next we will read The Wind in the Willows and the The Jungle Book. I bought a few abridged ones for my DD (age 6 1/2) to read on his own since I don't think he can handle the vocabulary or sentence structure yet in many of them. |
