Default Picture books set in particular states?

I think I'm going to do the 50 States for 1st grade social studies. That way, it sort of goes along with what my oldest is doing for American History, but a lot lighter than trying to cover the Civil War with a 6yo, kwim?

I'd like to use a lot of picture books to go along with this. Can we make a list of favorite picture books that have an identifiable setting within a particular state? Or a particular feature that reminds you of a particular state?

For example, maybe Blueberries For Sal reminds me of Maine blueberries.

I'll list the states later, and edit everyone's ideas into the OP, and whatever else I come up with.

Great idea! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

When I was Young in the Mountains would work for Virginia or West Virginia

Maybe this site will help? http://wrappedinfoil.com/Wrapped_in_Foil/Home.html
a lot of the books she lists are novels for older children though.

Night of the Moonjellies is about New England. It's not state specific though.

Apples to Oregon.

If you do want to touch on the Civil War you could try this one for South Carolina
http://www.amazon.com/Jack-That-Sumt...5099714&sr=1-1
My parents know the author and read it to ds over Christmas. He enjoyed it.

ETA: But I wouldn't pay $25 for it! Maybe check the library?

The Wheedle on the Needle for Washington? Does anybody else remember this from elementary school, or did I just have hippies for teachers?

I am totally going to update the OP.

But it might be in fits and spurts several days later than each post.
It depends on when I have my hands free instead of nak.

"Mudgy and Millie" for Idaho. It's like "Make Way for the Ducklings" in that it takes place in just one city (Coeur d'Alene), and if kids visit there, they will recognize all the landmarks. In fact, if you go there, there are statues of a moose (Mudgy) with a mouse (Millie) hiding in his ear at all the major locations within the story. Very fun!

I grew up in Alaska, and there are tons that are specific for there, but we love "Ol' 556" by Shannon Cartwright. About the Alaska Railroad, has tons of historical sites and native animals the trains go by. Anything by that author/illustrator is probably spectacular.
