I would like to start reading some poetry every day. Any suggestions?

Re: Poetry
I really like The Golden Books Family Trasury of Poems edited by Untermeyer and illustrated by Anglund.
Also, there is some basic information about introducing poetry to children and lots of online poems suitable for children as well as suggested books here: http://www.amblesideonline.org/Poets.shtml |

Re: Poetry
I have found some beautiful poetry in the McGuffey Readers. I also love the Children's Garden of Verses as well.

Re: Poetry
I have the Golden Treasury of Poetry, also, and like it. Also, there's a series of books called Poetry for Young People. Each one is about a different poet. I got a bunch of them through Scholastic books in a package, so if you get those, maybe they will offer them again.

Re: Poetry
The Poetry for Young People looks good. My library has it, so I ordered them.
The one I didn't order was Carl Sandburg. I don't know much about him, but I thought he was an evolutionist or something similar Anyone want to educate me?

Re: Poetry
That's one of the ones I have, and the little bio doesn't say anything like that, but it probably wouldn't. I think his poetry is probably a little hard for younger kids, except maybe "The Fog". I'm going to start with the Robert Frost one, I think. I'd like to get Longfellow, since he was from this area.

Re: Poetry
We started with Mother Goose. Right now, we're working our way through Shel Silverstein. I want to get Stevenson and Longfellow. But, dd has requested that we go to The Flower Fairy Poems when we're done with Silverstein. There are 6 books (we have a full compilation of all of them). It will take us awhile to read through those. When I'm done, I'm going back over Mother Goose for the little ones and either going with Frost or Dickenson for the big ones at the same time. Then, I'll worry about getting more poetry books in this house. But, from what I've seen Stevenson has a whole treasury of children's poems and a great deal of his other stuff is child-friendly as well. Honestly, if I were just starting out, I'd probably start with Stevenson or Mother Goose.

Re: Poetry
Shel Silverstein is a regular in our house. It's the only thing my husband ever, ever, ever reads.
(Well, besides magazines in the bathroom.)
