I'd get a brush so kitty gets used to brushing early (they often don't need it like they will when they are older, and I've had one or two who hated being brushed and it became quite the ordeal and I'd wished I'd gotten them more used to it).

Scratch pads are awesome. I used to have a great sisal one, but now I have cardboard ones from Trader Joes that come with catnip to sprinkle in them. I have two in my house, and my kitty loves to lay on them even after she's done scratching on them. It has saved my furniture for sure.

My current kitty loved My Little Pony hair when dd was younger. I'd watch and see what sorts of things kitty is attracted to for chewing on and put those up. I'd never have been able to anticipate My Little Pony hair, kwim?

Be sure your closets are closed so kitty doesn't climb your clothes.

Make some good window perches if you don't already have some.

I was thinking touching its feet too so I can clip its claws if needed.

Our cat recently turned one. She's a hoot! When DH was gone last week for a tournament, she meowed quite a bit. She's supposed to be my cat, but has claimed DH as her person. :P

Back with an update and photos in the spoiler.

We thought we had a Miss Nibbles but after our trip to the vet this morning we have a Mr Nibbles. LOL

Discovered last night that kitty had quite a lot of fleas so I bathed him and spent about two hours combing every inch and picking off fleas with tweezers. So, that is why we already had him at the vet this morning for a check and prescription for flea meds and all that. He also has a small heart murmur that the vet said is more likely related to the fleas and a bit of anemia and is expected to heal in time so we will go back for a further check-up. No other signs to indicate a further problem.

That funny toupee and sweet stripy tail

Diatomaceous Earth can be used in your home to help with fleas.

I used a spray from Walmart on my kitties because they were too young at the time for regular flea and tick meds. It had clove oil, cinnamon and soap, (sodium laurel sulphate?) you may be able to use it around the house as well.
