Re: anybody make their own veggie burgers?
My *picky* son likes these black bean burgers:
1/3 c chopped onion 2 cloves garlic 1 t cumin 1 1/2 cups black beans (drained and rinsed) 1/2 c coarse dried bread crumbs 1/3 c fresh cilantro (I usually omit this) 3/4 c walnuts (sometimes I omit this, too) 1 large egg salt and pepper process onion, garlic, and cumin in food processor. add beans, breadcrumbs, and cilantro and pulse until combined. (do NOT puree or they will be gross!!) transfer to bowl and stir in walnuts, season with salt and pepper. fold in egg and stir until combined. make into 4 patties and refrigerate for one hour (this is important) before heating in hot skillet with a smidge of oil. |

I make my own black bean burgers. I use black beans, bread crumbs, garlic, ginger, rice, allspice, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Sound interesting?

Re: anybody make their own veggie burgers?
I've made these before and served them on a bun with salad to my very *not* vegetarian BIL (he actually wears a t-shirt that says 'save a cow, eat a vegetarian!! ) Anyhow, he seriously thought it was a meat burger.
2 1/2 cups or 2 tins cooked kidney beans 1/2 cup rolled oats 1 tbs soy sauce 2 tbs vegetable oil. Drain and mash the beans. Add oats and soy sauce and knead with hands. Form into four large burgers. Saute in oil on each side, starting out with a high heat to brown, then lower the heat till they are cooked right through.

Re: anybody make their own veggie burgers?
Oooo, yum ladies! Thanks! I was referred to this forum because I am in uber-search of the homemade version of the Boca burger!
I love your ideas using beans and oatmeal, but I'm also curious if anyone has an idea how to replicate the Boca version. Looking at the ingredients on the package, there are no beans or oatmeal involved, just lots of soy products. Personally, I really like the fire-roasted version of the Boca, but they are hard to find. I'd love for some ideas on how to make them!

Re: anybody make their own veggie burgers?
I think the boca version might use TVP.Try 1part TVP with 2 parts water{Im not sure ladies what do you think is that too much water?}and whatever spices you like.Give the water time in the fridge to soak up water and then make patties.Warning, mine never stay together.I like the beans better.

Re: anybody make their own veggie burgers?
Black beans are hands down the best burger I've ever eaten. I just do a can of black beans either whole, refried, or the kind with spices in it already. Then a spoonfull or so of flour and whatever else looks good like onions, garlic, chilis, cilantro, corn, ketchup etc.
I put a big dollop in a hot pan and smush it really thin. These are so darn good!!

Re: anybody make their own veggie burgers?
I've made a few loafs, but I'm the only one who likes loafs. Everyone else hates them. So, it just never happens.

Just remember that your loaf really needs that ketchup or barbecue topping because there isn't all that fat to keep it moist.
