Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
I'm notorious for buying potatoes and not using the entire bag. I'm wondering if I could make mashed potatoes and freeze in dinner or snack sized portions.

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
I'm picky about texture but I think frozen mashed potatoes are awful! You might try a little and see if you like them, though.

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
Never tried it.... But maybe if the texture changes, which would make sense, you could use the frozen stuff for things like adding to soups to thicken...? Or in something like a Shepherds pie where the potatoes are baked again? Just something to possibly try?

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
No, they don't thaw out right. Think gritty mush.

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
FWIW, When I make Shepherd's Pie to freeze, I put an egg in the potato topping. That's the only way it turns out well.

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
Thank you! I never would have guess gritty mush. And, good to know about shepherd's pie. I was planning to make a batch and freeze in individual portions for my dd.

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
I've never done mashed potatoes alone but I make Pierogies (filling is mashed potatoes) and they come out great. I've also frozen twice baked potatoes with great success.

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
I would concur with all the previous posts. So the answer is maybe yes, maybe no. My DH has used frozen leftover mashed potatoes for lunches at work and one time he took a container of leftover icing, put some leftover pasta sauce and veggies, and had a very big suprise when reheated and tried to eat it. Icing instead of mashed potatoes is not recommended.

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
It's not very good. You can freeze grated potatoes raw. Google it because I haven't done it in awhile and I can't remember if there's anything special to do

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
Huh, I say yes. Mine turn out fine.... you have to thaw them completely first, then heat with a little more milk and really stir them up tho. I have never tried using the.micro for them

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
I wonder if the type of potato changes how well it freezes?

Re: Can I freeze mashed potatoes?
ooh, good point. Now I'm tempted to do a science experiment. And, turn it into a homeschool lesson.
