chalkboard paint in dining table?
We have a smallish wooden dining table (only eatting space in the house) I bought it in college and it has seen a lot the top if pretty well worn from water spills art mishaps and general moving damage. I ussually keep a table cloth on it to hide all this. We also honestly dont use it much as a sit down a a family space for better or worse because it is ussually covered in other projects anyways.
Lately Ive been thinking of painting the top with some chalkboard paint but before I try it a few questions 1) Do I need to prep to wood in any way? If I have to do a lot of sanding and such I'm not intrested my ADD self can't it will cut corners and them I'll have ruined something fuctional. 2) can the table still be used as a dining like if I toss a table cloth over when we do have family meals there or will it just feel too weird? 3) does chalkboard paint only come in black?

Re: chalkboard paint in dining table?
You can make your own chalkboard paint using 1/2 cup paint of your chosen color and 1 TBsp unsanded grout. I considered doing mine in chalkboard paint on top, but decided against it as I think it would be too porous for how much stuff gets spilled on my table =) a waterproof tablecloth of some kind might alleviate that concern for you.

Re: chalkboard paint in dining table?
I recently painted a small side table with tinted chalk board paint (from Lowes) and things really stick to the paint. I sanded/pretreated the surface before hand- but it just isn't awesome on the table top- things I set on it kind of stick weirdly. It's fine for this little side table- no big deal. But I don't know if I'd like it on a work surface (oh and the texture of the surface I don't like the way chalk boards feel though )
---------- Post added at 04:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:00 PM ---------- Oh and for prepping the wood you can use some thing called "rough and ready" some thing like that. You could ask at your local hardware store. But pretty much it's an oily chemical you rub onto the wood and then paint over.

Re: chalkboard paint in dining table?
I had thought of doing a similar table top thing, but seeing that things stick and it has that "chalkboard" feel makes me a little more weary. Thanks for the info!

Re: chalkboard paint in dining table?
I've seen people do runners in chalkboard paint, so perhaps that?
