Same here, pediatric optometrist to me would say "this person has experience this field with children" whereas "children's eye exams" says "well we usually do adults but you can bring your kids here too" Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: the word pediatric
Really? It doesn't seem that way to me at all at least around here. I was shocked that pediatricians are specialists here and not primary care providers.

Re: the word pediatric
Yes, sorry... Specialists that many of my friends seem to see as a matter of course with their kids... I'm English which complicates it further... So I would expect them to be specialists who are only seen for occasional and more complicated things.

Yes, that's my thought. "Children's eye exams" makes me think of the free vision screening they do at schools and health fairs.

Re: the word pediatric
This is an interesting discussion. I'm in the US. I always went to a pediatrician as a child, all my friends did, too. I am the odd mother who takes her children to a family practice doctor. Most of my friends use a pediatrician.

Re: the word pediatric
I don't know if socio-economic &/or educational background makes a difference or not but many of the people I grew up with were on the lower end of middle class down to poverty-level using state insurance. Many with little to know post -high school. It also could be WHERE I grew up as well - rural encroaching on suburban but mostly rural.

Re: the word pediatric
Pretty much all the mama groups I'm in, they use pediatricians. The only ones that use family doctors are those that can't find a pediatrician that is natural-minded or they are going to the family doctor that the mom goes to.

Re: the word pediatric
There do seem to be more family practices in the rural areas here.

Re: the word pediatric
Ok, another question. If you have "Family practice" listed in conjunction with an optometrist, but then find out they don't see anyone under age 5, would you think that was funny?
Because I do and I told someone that online the other day!

Re: the word pediatric
Maybe, like with a doctor I would find it weird to be a family practice but not see kids under 5. It's hard but not impossible to find a family dentist vs a pediatric one that will see and actually treat them under 5 though at least where I live so I might just shrug and move on with my search.
With specialties, I think it's easy to assume x problem doesn't happen under a certain age. But my kid's teeth came in at 6 mo with grey spots and were crumbling by 2 yo. Family practice should in theory but doesn't always include everyone. Advertising that does suggest that they would see anyone. I did end up going with a family dentist that would treat a 2 yo over a pediatric one that held him down to examine after assuring me he wouldn't do that. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Re: the word pediatric
Family practice implies *whole* family. So yeah, I'd expect that to include those under 5.

Re: the word pediatric
My family practice doctor came to the hospital to check out both my newborns, so I'd find it REALLY strange.
