A public forum.
Before posting here, please read this sticky and keep guideline 23 in mind:

23. No posts harshly dissecting parenting moments of others since we desire to humbly cultivate a heart attitude of grace and not judgment towards other mamas. We all struggle at times as parents and have much to learn, and GCM's focus is to provide tools and information for each of us to parent more effectively. Posts voicing some frustration regarding choices made by others can be okay, but it needs to be within the overall context of seeking understanding or ideas for better responses in the future.

gpsings, I think it's kind of cool that you feel so icky after reading bits of the book. Back when I first read them I hadn't heard about GCM or GBD so I didn't think anything of it. It would be fascinating to read it again from a different perspective. Isn't it amazing how perspectives change when you've been enlightened?

mathmaticalessymamma, so true!

I still need: the quote from p. 125-130 of The New Strong Willed Child, the article that recommends hitting a toddler who hits or the toddler's "hitting will persist or even escalate”.

Its on p 127 under argument 2

---------- Post added at 12:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:10 PM ----------

Ugh.

Quote:
ARGUMENT 2: Physical Punishment establishes the moral righteousness of hitting other persons who do something that is wrong.

COUNTERPOINT: The "spanking teaches hitting" belief has gained in popularity over the past decade but is ot supported by objective evidence. A distinction must be made between abusive hitting and nonabusive spanking. a child's ability to discriminate hitting from disciplinary spanking depends largely upon the parent's attitude toward spanking and the parent's procedure for spanking. There is no evidence in the medical literature that a mild spank on the buttocks of a disobedient child by a loving parent teaches the child agressive behavior.

The critical issue is how spanking (or, in fact, any punishment) is used, more so than whether it was used.
--The New Strong-Willed Child
May I ask what you are using this for? I feel an urgent need to blog coming on, but I dont' want to steal anyone's thunder.

There's sooo much wrong with this. It needs addressed.

Blog away, my friend!

I'm writing a parenting book called A Parenting Manual for the Imperfect. I'm planning on uploading it to Kindle in a week or two. I'll have hard copies published in a few months and would be happy to send it to you all since you've been so helpful.

NOTE TO SELF: Get a kindle.

Yeah, flipping through excerpts from the book is a skin crawling feeling now. I can remember reading it before and thinking, oh yeah, that makes so much sense! But now, it makes me want to cry. How misleading that charming man can be!

Yes, exactly. I thought he was pretty smart, but now I just think the man is an idiot! Getting into a snarling fight with a dog, waiting to go in to his infant while she is getting her breath b/w cries so she won't learn that they respond to crying? I used to respect him before actually having children.

I had the same experience. I've read both books, and didn't even think anything of his story, and actually remember chuckling at the mental image that he portrayed with his dog. Now, I have no idea why I find it funny, and have no idea why I didn't find it disturbing, as I do now

I have both books in the bookshelf if you need more help. My mother was a BIG Dobson fan

I keep them for reference and because they aren't quite bad enough to burn them (did that with Ezzo, Pearl and Tripp, ftr) but I definitely don't want to donate them and let someone else get hold of them. So, there they sit 12 years later.

Thanks TTL. I'm good for now.

Dobson was pretty big in our house growing up too.

Did you get what you were looking for?
I'm 99% sure the thing with him beating the dog about staying in the dog bed and comparing it (without really spelling it out) to how you have to beat down a child to show who is boss is in Strong Willed Child, since that's the only one I've read thoroughly.
I think that's the one with the intentionally extremely painful shoulder pinch advice too.
