child proofing a chain link fence
We have a chain link fencer around our backyard, which we secured ("locked") with bungee cords. This worked great, and we allowed ds to roam the backyard. Well, he's now figured out how to take them off and escapes. We need something more secure asap.
I have looked at the kind of locks like this: http://www.hooverfence.com/catalog/cpage32.htm My concern is that, at least on one side, I'm pretty sure ds could reach the top of it to push it down. He's pretty tall, and the fence is not all that high. We also have some utilities in our backyard, which mean that we have repair people coming at unexpected times into our backyard to work on it. We haven't had problems with the bungee cords, fortunately, but we have to make sure it's something other people can open and close. So nothing like a lock with a key or combination. Do we have any other options? I'm afraid ds is going to figure out a way to push the lock open in the link and get the door open. We have two doors, so we need two different locks.

Re: child proofing a chain link fence
This is a chain link gate with the U shaped hook? Just put a double end snap (well really only one end is fine, we just had double ended ones for horse buckets) through the hole and the U shaped thing can't be lifted up. Easy peasy.

Re: child proofing a chain link fence
You're welcome!
If/when he figures it out you could put it the way that a taller person would have to reach over and undo it from the outside side of the gate.

Re: child proofing a chain link fence
We had carabiners on our gates for a while until J figured out how to open them. After that we switched to padlocks.

Re: child proofing a chain link fence
I got some small combination locks. DS won't be able to get them open. I am planning on taping the combination on the lock so the utility workers can open it. Very cheap fix!! Thank you both!

Re: child proofing a chain link fence
Great idea! Keeping child in but not necessarily keeping people out!
