Default How does this work in your family?

Hi!

Just curious as to how you handle it when you ask dc not do/play with something for whatever reason, and then they wait until you have your attention focused elsewhere, and do it anyways. This is a situation that seems to be happening a lot here. I will remind dd5 that I had asked her not to do xyz for reason xyz. She says she knows and is sorry. Most times there isnt really a logical consequence, even though I feel it is done for attention, I find she craves attention constantly, and with dd1 and household chores, etc...blah-blah.....
Tia!

I move the child or the object.

I think it is part of being 5. Henry is just coming out of this phase...where the child seems big enough and smart enough to have some impulse control, but they evidence less control than a toddler does.

I've done this punitive and I've done it GBD, and I just think it is part of being 5.

Yay! So there is an end in sight. Exactly what you said! dd1 will listen to what I said, and dd5 says OK, then turns arounds does it, and says she's sorry.

so this is what I can look fwd to next year? one of dd's good friends is 5yo and he plays over here fairly often and exhibits this behavior. in addition to removal, i find often a smallish dose of focused attention (me stopping my chores or whatever and playing with them for a little bit) helps...till the next time. I used to expect 'older kids' (like 5yos, haha) not to NEED much adult one on one, but am finding that less and less true and am adjusting my expectations. They can seem so big compared to our littles, but really are still so young
