Sigh. Recipes for a bean-hating, tofu-hating dh?
I'm running out of ideas and dh is threatening to buy meat !! Got any economical recipes for a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy who doesn't like beans, lentils or tofu?
Thank you! |

have you tried red lentils? The have better taste and texture for bean hateres.
I'm really stumped. I've run throuh several recipes in my head, and the all have beans. Spaghetti Chili with pasta instead of beans does he like rice? what veg recipes has he liked?

Risotto, pasta (both are good with roasted veges)
chunky soups (like minestrone, or homestyle pumpkin or tomato, french onion etc) with crusty bread Omelettes/Fritattas if you do eggs salads are nice with a little crumbled feta, and roast veges (sweet bell peppers, pumpkin etc) with a balsamic dressing (if you do dairy) Eggplant parmigiana (I have a recipe for a vegan version) stuffed bell peppers (stuff with rice, cheese if you do it, veges etc). vege stir fries with noodles vege fried rice (nasi goreng - good with a little curry paste) vege red or green thai curries vege pad thai (fried rice noodles and veggies) There are a lot of Indian spice dishes that don't contain lentils - Saag Alu (spinach and potato), Aloo Gobi (potato and Cauliflower) - I have recipes for those and a few more, one is a cauli and tomato curry, a potato-tomato curry, a five vegetable curry, a potato/yoghurt/ground almond curry. Will he try hummus, or anything like that? antipasto platters are also a favourite here. |

It's still soy, but the meat subsitutes are going over pretty welll with my "meat n potatoes" dh. I don't think it's particularly budget friendly but I can't say for certain. I'll admit we're in a bit of a crisis mode with his cholesterol and his health is trumping our budget at the moment so I can't say I've paid much attention to price.
He's liked "smart ground" (a ground beef substitute) and "Gimme Lean" ("sausage") |

Abbi,
What do you do with your red lentils? I picked some up today but have no idea how I want to cook them. I think I have anything I could need to go with them

red lentils make awsome soup cause they disolve and make the soup thicker. I like this one : http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/archive/t-1962.html or something like it.

That sounds good... well maybe not to my stomach, which is suffering from pregnancy but it sounds good to my brain.

If you press the water out of extra firm tofu, then marinate and press again and then freeze it, it has a texture and taste similar to chicken. You can cube it and cook stir fry or pasa dishes or you can put it in a hashbrown casserole.

Rice or buckwheat noodles with peanut sauce?
Nuts can be a good, hearty, protein-rich substitution for meat, if your family can eat nuts. Potatoes, onions, peppers, and garlic sauteed in olive oil with fennel and/or italian seasoning? |
