New Knitters
My daughter and I have just started knitting. I would like us to both start a project with the goal of making Christmas presents. What would a simple first project be when all we know how to do is knit stitch, purl, decrease a row and increase a row. We still need to learn how to bind off but I think it would be nice if we could get started on a project soon. I think socks or a hat would be too hard, but a scarf too easy. We only have straight needles and I think those both use circular ones. Any suggestions are appreciated

Re: New Knitters
Hats tend to be pretty easy, far easier than socks. You could also try a cowl, maybe.

Re: New Knitters
Almost of all of my knitting involves no more than the basics. Arm or leg warmers would be easy. Also there are lots of easy knit toys. Small purses or book covers etc. Ravelry.com is a good resource.

Re: New Knitters
I like the idea of a small purse. I think I need to read more about hats, as I thought circular needles were needed. Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

I also think you could knit a hat. You can do them on straight needles and then seam up the side.

Re: New Knitters
Knitted lace ball. Although using size 0 needles and such fine thread, it may be difficult to get used to at first. But the pattern is easy and predictable and just repeats over and over. I've made a ton of them as Christmas gifts.
Headbands are fun because there are so many patterns out there you can use. I've made balls for babies/toddlers. Scarves can be fun if you find an interesting pattern and don't just stick to garter stitch. knittinghelp.com is one of my favorite places for how-to videos. I had a person IRL teach me to cast on and do the knit stitch. Everything else I've pretty much figured out using those videos and youtube.

Re: New Knitters
I found a really simple pattern fosocks that uses two needles and darns a seam. It mightn't be real socks, but I am sure feeling accomplished the closer I get to the toe. My daughter is even working on her own sock! I hope between the two of us we come up with a pair soon.
