"Training" Your Toddler the Biblical Way
Today I went to a mom's brunch at church. I overheard some ladies talking. One asked another how things were going. She said that she has started "training" her 13 month old and it was very hard for her. She really wanted to do it the right way but felt bad having to flick her hand. Well the first women said to her, "I know it is hard, I went through the same thing when my children were that age. But just know that you are training her in the way of the Lord." She then went on to talk about how hard it was during the day and she didn't want to miss a chance to train her and have to start all over again. Another women say something that sounded like, "just beat them" but I didn't really hear her that well.
Ok...so I am overhearing all this holding my 14 month old boy wondering what in the world she could be talking about. Ok I know what flicking is, I have seen it. But I honestly can't imagine flicking my son all day long. When we are home he is always exploring. Playing with things, checking things out. And then on top of that saying that it is the "training" the Bible talks about. I just don't understand how people can think this way. I really don't get it. Does anyone have any insight on it? My brain wants to figure out where this thinking comes from? Just passed down from generation to generation? Do they really feel in their hearts it is the right thing to do? How different will my child be because we don't flick? I am not planning on staying at this church long. But I sure felt like the odd one out today.

Re: "Training" Your Toddler the Biblical Way
I don't imagine that my Lord would flick a child's hand. Although, when I was immersed in that, I truly did believe that I was doing it "God's Way" |

Re: "Training" Your Toddler the Biblical Way
When I was immersed in that, I truly believed that I was doing God's will. That I *needed* to train, control, my kids, otherwise they would turn away from God. I can see now how twisted that all sounds! It's the "good baby" = "Godly baby" type thing. . . if they are 'trained' to be quiet, obedient, good, etc., then they are being trained in God's way. . . because that's how God wants us all to be like.
