baby not eating
Hi, hope you're all having a great Mothers' Day!
My question is concerning food requirements and when to be concerned with child's eating habits... My son is 10.5 months old and has always been keen on his food. Until last week, anyway! All of a sudden he is turning his nose up at all solids and will only have breast milk. I've even tried waiting til his mouth is open and quickly throwing the food in but it just gets spit right out again. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it likely to just pass? I've noticed he's getting thinner and he weighs the same now as 2 months ago, but he still looks very healthy - noone would look at him and be concerned. If it makes any difference, he is teething and has a streaming cold, poor boy. He had a cold when he was first born and grew 6 other teeth on 2 different occasions and never turned his nose up at food (tho I didn't give him solids when he was first born!). I'm also wondering how much an almost-one year old should be eating and drinking. Some days he'll have 400mLs of water and other days just 4...tho plenty of breast milk. Is breast milk still enough to keep him well hydrated? Thanks in advance for advice PS I'm sorry if this post is in the wrong place, I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate this site - especially from my phone!

Re: baby not eating
It's likely to pass. Is it possible he's teething? Teething babies don't always want solids. Or maybe he just has an upset tummy for a couple of days.
Yes, breastfeeding will be enough to keep him well hydrated. Did you know that in hot weather your milk thins out so that baby drinks more to get the same nutritional value? Cool, huh? Anyway, if you're having water available for him, and he's choosing not to drink it, you can be confident that his body doesn't need it. Babies make pretty healthy choices about what they need for food and drink, because they haven't learned not to yet. |

Re: baby not eating
Ooh especially as I'm living in Africa that is cool to know about thinning milk - and handy! He has been guzzling the milk down at night so maybe he's behaving like a garden and only watering himself at night so it stays around and doesn't dehydrate immediately

Re: baby not eating
yes teething + a cold is enough to put any baby off their usual appetite.I would make sure you get plenty of fluids and just nurse him lots.Maybe try some things like puting some frozen green peas out for him or other amall pieces of frozen fruit.Might feel good to him right now.........
