Weve had issues with kidney failure eventually claiming our dry food only cats. Even high quality grain free. Maybe because of where we live. Dry hot weather. We use dry to sumplement but wont do only dry again.

Interesting. I have not heard of that. What would it be called? We get the poultry crumbles for about $12 or $13 for a 40 or 50 pound bag - can't remember - and it works fine for us.
We only feed dry cat food for our indoor cats and we get it from Costco. If we have sick foster kittens, the shelter or SPCA usually gives us canned food, but I sometimes will go and buy the really good canned food - it is not friskies or any brand you can get at wal-mart, but the more expensive, all meat, healthier ones and that is better for sickly animals.

I think there are a few different brands (Equine Fresh, Guardian, etc) but it looks like Tractor Supply Company has their own version as well: http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...-bedding-40-lb

We always bought good cat food and good litter because it works better. Cheap litter means more stink!

I don't find one cat to be expensive at all. (If s/he stays healthy).

I rotate what I buy for food. Blue, Innova, any of the better brands. He only gets 1/2 cup a day total. He's 12 pounds.

I now give him half a can of food a couple to few times a week. A friend gives her cats only wet food, but dry food is so much easier, so this is my compromise.

As for litter, not bad for one cat either. I like pine litter, I don't like the smell of clay litter. Personal preference.

Indoor cats really only a rabies and distemper vaccine every 3 years. Outdoor cats should also have a Feline Leukemia vaccine.

Apart from occasional vetting, my cats have never been expensive. I grew up mostly with barn cats, so they were outdoors. I've had one indoor cat in my adult life, and her main expenses are food, litter, and flea collars/shampoo. I don't buy her expensive food, but I do buy the right kind for her age and lifestyle. She gets cat treats occasionally.

I think they are definitely less expensive to take care of than dogs.

Can be. They certainly eat less.

When saving half can of food for later in the week, does your cat need it at room temp before she'll eat it? (I refrigerate the leftover half. )my cat won't eat it till it's not cold anymore

Mine eats it cold, but now that you ask, he eats some and comes back in a bit for more. I smash it up some in the bowl (the second half of the can that is) and add a tad of water)
