1st grade and spelling. How important is it?
DS was doing fine with spelling at first when they were very short words and words that were spelled phonetically. But now he's not doing well.
I use A Beka and am only doing half of the words now, which is about 6. I tried spellingtime.com and he loved it at first. then I watched him and he was unscrambling the letters but not reading it trying to figure it out. Like he unscrambled the letters for girl , GRLI what I want to ask is is spelling that important in first grade? I've kind of just stopped doing spelling. He reads very well.

Re: 1st grade and spelling. How important is it?
TBH I have issues w/ abeka because I think it moves too fast for most children.
I like spelling in the "spell to write and read" system (Not that I use it) , but not traditional school-type spelling. My child is 6.5 and still has trouble soundingn out 3 letter words. there is no way I would push spelling on him.
