Pinocchio versions?

I am wondering which versions of Pinocchior are accurate, or a good version to read to a 6.5 yr old. So far only two came in from my library- one is definitely shortened and altered. I think I started reading one that might be accurate. I was shocked tonight when Pinocchio killed the cricket (sadly I only know the Disney version). Then in the shorter book I saw that the cricket appears again (the short version doesn't say the cricket died). But in the longer one I already started reading to my son I see that a few chapters later the cricket is back- as the cricket's ghost. And some of the pictures look really scary on cats with knives. Instead of sitting down to read the whole thing right now I thought I'd ask here first...

Is a true, accurate version of Pinocchio appropriate for a 6 yr old?
and, does anyone know which are good versions?

I guess the question is whether you believe all fairy tales require a Disney ending or not.

I'm currently reading the long version of Pinnochio to my 5 and 3 year olds for bedtime story. However, I also read original Grimms Fairy Tales, which are--to the say the very least, quite macabre compared to Disney versions. I've ready Peter Pan to my kids as well, even though Tinkerbell is quite crash and shocking.

I read my children original fairy tales. I prefer they know that fairy tales were moral lessons and not always tied up in a pretty package with a bow. A LOT of parents have a great deal of issues with the nature of real fairy tales. Only you can answer the question of what you want to present to your children, not someone else.

Yes, Pinnochio rashly and impulsively knocks the head off the cricket for giving him sound advice. The cricket shows up later as a ghost continuing to try to advice Pinnochio, without much luck a great deal of the time. Pinnochio is rash and impulsive and selfish. His father is a fool most of the time. Thus is Pinnochio. If that's not the story you want to tell your child, then absolutely go with a different version.

so are there any good lessons to be learned or it's just a naughty boy and foolish old man? (I'm only on chapter 3...)
