Default Picture books set in particular states?

I think I'm going to do the 50 States for 1st grade social studies. That way, it sort of goes along with what my oldest is doing for American History, but a lot lighter than trying to cover the Civil War with a 6yo, kwim?

I'd like to use a lot of picture books to go along with this. Can we make a list of favorite picture books that have an identifiable setting within a particular state? Or a particular feature that reminds you of a particular state?

For example, maybe Blueberries For Sal reminds me of Maine blueberries.

I'll list the states later, and edit everyone's ideas into the OP, and whatever else I come up with.

General Helpful Websites with book ideas for this--

Great idea! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

When I was Young in the Mountains would work for Virginia or West Virginia

Maybe this site will help? http://wrappedinfoil.com/Wrapped_in_Foil/Home.html
a lot of the books she lists are novels for older children though.

Night of the Moonjellies is about New England. It's not state specific though.

Apples to Oregon.

WOW! That looks like an amazing series!!!!

It's only....$900+ for the complete set, bought new.
I wonder if I can talk my library into it.
I'm seriously going to look at ebay and amazon and half.com to see whether I could piece together some of those used. Maybe at least for the states that I'm low on other books??? Man, I wish they gave some sort of a quantity discount that would make them affordable for a lowly homeschooler...

I didn't even bother checking the price...I just got excited when I found there was one for each state!

FWIW, I just bout the E is for Evergreen for less than $5 on ebay. I bet you could find many of them used for a good price.

I wonder if you contacted them. . . If they would do a deal?

I asked our library if they could get the series, they wouldn't because the use of the non local states would not be high enough to warrant the price.

I wonder if a group of users went in together and rotated the books around.

Btw, what I love about these books is the illustrations, and the multiple levels of reading. Simple stuff for younger kids and more depth for the adult or older child.

Must put forth the BEST Hawaiian books out there.

Footloose the Mongoose, there are two books by Elaine Masters. Footloose and the Dancing Flea and Footloose the Mongoose and his Wondeful Ohana.

If you want something historical she wrote one about a singing Myna bird in Kimehameha's court called The Royal Waker Upper.

There is also a science related book but called Lullaby Moon not my favorite by the kids LOVE it.

I can loan you all of the Hawaiian books Gotta have them back when you are done though, they are autographed to her great-grandkekes and they need their Granny's books in their collection still

If you do want to touch on the Civil War you could try this one for South Carolina
http://www.amazon.com/Jack-That-Sumt...5099714&sr=1-1
My parents know the author and read it to ds over Christmas. He enjoyed it.

ETA: But I wouldn't pay $25 for it! Maybe check the library?

The Wheedle on the Needle for Washington? Does anybody else remember this from elementary school, or did I just have hippies for teachers?
