I am completely against flouride ingestion, just not topical use as a treatment when there is already some caries and other surface issues. And I know everyone doesn't agree...and I agree that is ok.

got a (questionable) diagnosis of 9 cavities in my 2yo. thankfully our insurance for him doesn't kick in until january -because it gives me the exuse to try things out at home. i've already started xylitol on his toothpaste...and we're brushing like 5 times a day now (if not more) and i'm going to the store later to get some bubblegum ACT. i don't think flouride topically is as bad either and at this point i'm going to at least try!

I totally respect that . . . but that is what we think ruined my dh's teeth -- too much topical fluoride

Sorry. . . I should just let it go

My sis's teeth got ruined by ingesting it. I understand that our experiences shape us. My husband swished his flouride for 10 minutes the other day and I about croaked when I found out! After our teeth are healed, I plan to reduce or eliminate the use of the flouride. I look at it like medicine to treat an infection. Too much is very bad. When there is an infection though, sometimes they are necessary. I have been fighting the doctor on giving us flouride for years. Now we are all using it though. I would be more concerned about using it topically too, if we drank water that had it in it. Our water has a very minimal amount compared to treated water. We can't find any that is 100% flouride free, so we do the best we can.

Fascinating!! I am defo going to try this! After bf'ing for 2 years, I had tons of tiny little cavities between my teeth - I wish i had read this before I had them all fixed at the dentist. But there is one more area that we are keeping an eye on and plus my front teeth are thinning.... so I'm going to try this protocol for the next 6 months and see if there is a difference.

Natalie - what cal/mag do you use and how much?

My teeth were in sad sad shape growing up. My parents pushed little fluoride chewables that we chewed and spit out. I didn't -stop- getting cavities until I stopped using fluoride. Josh's teeth were horrific. He's missing three molars now. He still has some trouble, but nothing like he did before he stopped using fluoride. He still drinks soda, and doesn't take cal-mag.

I use a Rainbow Lite cal-mag-d right now because it's the best value I can find at the moment. It's not the only one I've used. See AllisoninTX's cal-mag sticky.

I had flouride treatments when I was young and I have great teeth.

I'm not comfortable with my kids using it at all though, especially when they're still swallowing the toothpaste.

I feel absolutely dense. I have had my kids treated with flouride. Andrew has never had a cavity. Aaron has had several. He had to be hospitalized. It was so sad.
why is flouride terrible?

My dad credits my good teeth to the fluoride tablets he bought when I was a kid. I actually got twice the recommended dose, because my sister hated them and I loved them. I also had fluoride treatments at the dentist and ate whatever candy and sweets I could get my hands on.

I think I just lucked out. You can do everything right and still end up with problems.

I think *if* fluoride helps, it's not going to help everyone and it's not something everyone will want to risk using. We don't ingest it at all (at our old house there was naturally occurring fluoride in the water, none was added, I was fine with that).

As far as topical use my oldest's dental floss has fluoride specifically to target the soft spots on his teeth which are between his molars. I have no idea if it's been helpful but it hasn't made them worse. The only person who uses fluoride toothpaste is Dh. I use toothsoap, and the boys use fluoride free toothpaste for the oldest and the weleda gel for the youngest.

So if you're against flouride, and your water is treated with flouride, do you buy water? We have a pur filter system but I don't even know if it filters out flouride. I think buying water, when you can get it tap (albeit filtered) is ridiculous...but maybe I should rethink...I don't like the idea that I'm drinking lots of flouride. For now, I'm ok with it being topical, not so much being ingested.

I would get a filter to filter it out or at least minimize it.

We have a filter. Some bottled water has fluoride in it, so it's good to call the company and ask.

I looked it up.

I wanted to add....we avoided Flouride like crazy. I have a kind of biggish cavity and 3-4 brown spots and Isaac has 3 brown spots. Now we are using topically.

Default Re: My teeth are remineralizing.

Will any of this help at all with enamel that is lost? My teeth are in horrible shape and breaking off after 4 kids and nursing over the last 6 years. I was told by the dentist that a lot of it was cavaties, but now I think more of it was weakness in my teeth overall because where he put the fillings, they ended up coming out and I have the non-enamel portions of my teeth exposed in front. I have large portions of my two front teeth with no enamel (I HATE how it looks and it is painful at times). I've been reluctant to try and get a dentist to do anything again because I know they will just want to fill it again which means drilling away what I have left of my teeth to make it the "right" surface they think which will weaken everything and probably cause more breaks again.
