Science of Parenting/Encouragement
Hi mamas-
I am reading The Science of Parenting, by Margot Sunderland. It's really interesting and has a lot of extremely useful information about parenting and brain development. She talks a lot (and I have been learning more about this for work as well as I work in early grades/venturing more into early childhood in international education context) about building resiliency in children in their early childhoods and how we now have so much evidence to support how responsive parenting actually builds brain cells and pathways and changes outcomes for children. I am working with a world-renowned expert in children and resiliency, who is a wonderful human being and was with me on a work trip in January when I had DD with me (she was almost 2 at the time). She joined us for dinner as he observed me running around after her he said you know, I know that parenting in these young years is physically and emotionally exhausting (he has three grown children himself). He said I just want to encourage you in being so responsive to your DD--we had talked earlier in the evening about cultural norms and breastfeeding and cosleeping, and I told him, somewhat shyly, that DD was still nursing and that she cosleeps and that our DS coslept as well until he was 5 or 6. Every time you hold her and respond to her lovingly at night or in the day, he said, you are literally building her brain and changing her DNA. Those words of encouragement have stuck with me these past months so I wanted to share them with you mamas as well! I have this vision now when I snuggle DD at night and work through her trying episodes as a new 2 year old that all these synapses are firing and connecting in her brain, and that her brain is actually growing. These images are so powerful to me.
