Default When did homemaker change to stay-at-home-mom?

I was thinking about this today. We were actually discussing this at the supper table tonight. DS1 said something about whatever it is I call that I do.

Dh said domestic engineer.

I told them that when I was a child that Grandma called herself a homemaker. And I think it was even a choice on some surveys of jobs (maybe, I could be wrong on that).

I like Homemaker much better than SAHM, it actually describes what I do, make our home.

I agree. It's the word I use when speaking. I type SAHM because it's easier.

I always put homemaker or home worker. Or homeschooling parent. I've never used the term sahm.

I don't like any of the terms I've come across. I try to avoid using them as much as possible.

I am a stay at home mom (actually a homeschooling mom) and not a home maker. I define it that way because I am home specifically because of the kids and their needs I am not working to achieve any high standards of house keeping or other domestic skills.

Well, technically a sahm is a homemaker, but a homemaker is not necessarily a sahm, right? Although I guess technically they are two different jobs. Most sahm's also are homemakers. But you technically could be a sahm and purposely NOT be a homemaker, right?

Back in "the day" women generally tended to their homes, regardless of having children or not.

Today, it's sort of rare (isn't it??? I think it is...) to find a woman who is a "homemaker" with no kids, or at least no kids yet. It's common for older women to continue to stay home after raising their kids, but I don't think (again, I may be wrong), it's very common for women to be homemakers pre-kids.

I don't actually "say" either. I just say I'm a mom, if people want to ask if I have a career then I will say no. I feel like homemaker or stay-at-home-mom is some term that people have come up with as though they need to make themselves feel as important as people with jobs. I'm just me, I don't need a title.

I don't know if those are my MB letters talking or what.

Default Re: When did homemaker change to stay-at-home-mom?

I think the change was intended to show the priority of focus. Homemaker was associated with the 1950's perfect housekeeper and 'dinner on the table at 6' myth. 'Stay at home mom' came, it seems, to show a choice to focus on our kids, but trying not to antagonize our 'work outside the home mom' sisters.
