Maxi dresses

Maternity maxi dresses that are in the stores are just not to my taste. Not to mention I can't find any that are not all cotton that are not an arm and a leg. I was thinking of sewing my own, but I have not sewed in a long time and was not that great when I did. How hard would it be to make a maxi dress or skirt? How forgiving are they? And just as important, how long does it take a beginner to make one? And does anyone have any patterns they prefer over others?

I made them for maternity and it was really easy. You need a tee shirt and two yards of coordinating fabric. You cut the tee shirt above where your belly will be (leaving seam allowance) and then sew the fabric flat across the back but ruffled across the front. You dont have to turn and top stitch since you are using the edge that's already sealed. Then depending on your height, you can either trim and hem the bottom or just leave it, since it's already sealed too.

Oh, before you attach the skirt piece you want to sew the ends together, turned so they dont fray, so it makes a tube basically. So you make the skirt first and then attach it. Two yards was perfect for me but i am a size 18-20. It was of course a little big at first but fit all the way to the end.

I can take a pic tomorrow if you need a visual reference. It was really easy to do though. It took me longer to decide how to do it than it did to actually get it done.

I've seen pictures of what you are describing, so don't take a picture unless you just want to. What about making one from scratch? Tee shirts are starting to be really irritating to me, so I was thinking of making them with a woven fabric instead of knit and want them sleeveless.

That would be a little more advanced, because of the allowance you'd need in the belly.

Can you make them from existing tank tops?

Like maybe get some white cotton undershirts from the mens department, dye them chocolate brown so they aren't see through anymore, and then attach skirt?

I think this aversion is sensory. I can't stand seams or other things touching me right now. I am so touched out by my family that clothes are driving me crazy. The idea of one of those seams cutting across me is enough to make me twitchy. Could I make it from scratch using a stretchy knit? Or would I have the same issue as the woven?

i also just bought dresses from the regular non maternity section and they fit me just fine

some i sized up one in but some were just fine in my regular size. toward the very very end you could kinda notice that the front was about 2inches higher then the back, but i didn't care at that point, plus i ididnt' think people would be that interested in the bottom hem of my dress

but i wore them a ton because they were soo comfy

Target makes really soft cotton tank tops you could use those for the top half if you decided to sew one for yourself.

I broke down and bought a simplicity pattern and some cotton fabric. My mother said I can use her sewing machine, I have a free afternoon, so we will see how it goes. If I completely blow it at least it is still a lot cheaper than the stores.
