Re: Walmart Discipline Experience.
Okay, that did it. I have been holding on by a thread tonight, and now I am full on sobbing.
Thanks for sharing...that was a beautiful example of "dealing with disappointment." |

Cold water, huh? I gotta' write that down. Or is it the spirit you take on when you wait on someone?

Thank you so much for sharing! Poor boy and poor parents, too. What a wonderful blessing that woman was!

Re: Walmart Discipline Experience.
That boy was my ds today. I was that mom. Sort of. I never lost my cool or raised my voice. But ds was raging (full tilt) and my oldest and I were literally wrestling him to the ground to carry him out. I can't imagine what was going through the minds of the on-lookers. Well, except the disdain and disgust I could see clearly on their faces.
I'm so glad that WM employee was there. What a difference a calm voice of reason (with ammo - water ) can make! |

Re: Walmart Discipline Experience.
Man, I wish there was someone like that at every store just ready to jump in for situations like that. To a lesser extent, I sure could use someone like that every now and then. What a wonderful job she did.

Re: Walmart Discipline Experience.
One of Dr. Karyn Purvis' big things is "coming alongside" the child. Using an open posture. Shoulder's down, eyebrows relaxed, face relaxed. She recommends lowering your voice and bringing yourself down to the child's level. Instead of forcing eye contact, you may come up next to a child and mirror their body language. She emphasizes being "compassionate and firm."
The flip side (predator posture) would be standing above a child, raising your voice, clenching your fist, high shoulders, angry forced eye contact, tense/angry tone. Essentially it's an oppressive and dominating posture. I wish I could find her words directly to quote it, but I think I've described it well enough from memory. Interestingly, the Walmart Employee really did well. She came in confident, open, friendly. She lowered herself next to the boy (not directly in front) and then did things that were non-threatening and respectful. At the same time, I don't think any of the three (boy and parents) would have said no to her telling the boy to drink. A nice mix of compassion and firmness. |

Re: Walmart Discipline Experience.
Manda, great point about the posturing! We went over that last month in a foster care training class. I totally forgot about that. I'm gonna have to remember that for my kiddos.

Re: Walmart Discipline Experience.
I almost got teary-eyed. And these kind of stories don't really get to me like that...probably because I've been that adult in charge of the tantruming kid (not screaming myself, b/c I'm not a screamer, but feeling a bit about what other people must be thinking)....
