Teaching puppy to walk on her leash?
She'll do it for DH but when I take her out she's really difficult. Won't even react to her name. Pulls all over the place.
I've read about giving a treat every so often for walking nicely, but I can't get her to look at me to give her the treat Outside is so exciting, she's so distracted. |

Re: Teaching puppy to walk on her leash?
Have you tried a noisy toy or a target stick?
Have you seen this yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqURxL6v4ds ---------- Post added at 09:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:18 PM ---------- I'd probably start (depending age etc) on just working in the yard before serious walks. |

Re: Teaching puppy to walk on her leash?
^^ What she said! We have one dog who doesn't work well for treats she needs a noisy toy!
Spending time bonding while not "working" will help with her listening to you too.

Re: Teaching puppy to walk on her leash?
In the house she listens to me better than DH, but outside it's a different matter. I wonder if his voice gets her attention more because it's louder/deeper?
Will try the noisy toy We definately need to work on it in the garden. I'll probably leave the actual walks to DH for a while because I probably shouldn't be attached to a pulling dog yet. Yesterday really hurt my incisions |

Re: Teaching puppy to walk on her leash?
The guy in that video has a whole playlist for new puppy stuff and I'm finding him really helpful. There is just SO much outside for puppies/dogs. They see and hear and smell so much more and it is OUTSIDE!! So big and wide and wondrous.
I will have to see what we can do come summer. we have a 90% fenced in area the dog can go to, but I don't have a chair I can take down and plant myself in for her to enjoy being outdoors safely. I will have to figure out a way to block off what isn't fenced and we'll be OK. I think you'll find the more she gets comfortable with her surroundings and trusts you both, the better she will behave on leash. |
